If someone has foot fungus and toenail fungus for years, what other side effects can occur with in the body?

None: Nail fungus is caused by a type of fungus called a dermatophyte. Other than also causing athletes foot, there are few internal medical concerns. That's not to say you shouldn't treat them. Thick fungus nails can cause pain and bacterial infection, especially in diabetics or patients with poor circulation.

Can you please describe the negative side effects from taking oral meds for toe fungus that won't go away?

Can you please describe the negative side effects from taking oral meds for toe fungus that won't go away?

Side effects: Different medications have different side effects. The medication that I use for my patients with your problem carries the risk of liver damage. To lower the risk, we draw blood to ensure the patient's liver is healthy before we start the medication and after several weeks to ensure that no damage is occuring.

My toenail is only attached on one side. I taped it down because snagging it hurts. It is getting black from underneath. There is no pain, discharge or odor. Could it be fungus?

My toenail is only attached on one side. I taped it down because snagging it hurts. It is getting black from underneath. There is no pain, discharge or odor. Could it be fungus?

Could be: Although it could be fungus, the loose nail must come off. To leave it attached can cause pain and be a source for infection. See your doctor for a referral to a specialist to remove the loose part of the nail. It should grow back after removal.

Took terbinafine for toenail fungus for 3 months. How long before I see results and what are signs of side effects?

Months: If it works, it will likely take 6 or more months to eradicate the fungus from the toe nails. The major side effect is liver impairment and thus a liver enzyme should be obtained in the first month of therapy.

Why is my toenail darkening on the sides? Only one toe has a nail that's turning dark in the corner. Is it a sign of a fungus or caused by my shoes?

Why is my toenail darkening on the sides? Only one toe has a nail that's turning dark in the corner. Is it a sign of a fungus or caused by my shoes?

Dark toenails: Dark lines in toenails of African Americans is often a result of genetics, but can also be triggered by chronic minor trauma, such as shoes as you have mentioned. Fungal infections of the toenails is usually characterized by yellowing, thickening and flaking.

Is oral Lamisil (terbinafine) worth taking despite the possible side effects? What's the worst that could happen if I don't treat my toenail fungus?

Is oral Lamisil (terbinafine) worth taking despite the possible side effects? What's the worst that could happen if I don't treat my toenail fungus?

Maybe: Lamisil (terbinafine) is actually a much safer drug than people think. The risk of liver problems is really quite small. I do, however, recommend a baseline blood test (liver profile and complete blood count) prior to starting with a repeat test about 6 weeks into the therapy. Normal course of treatment for toenails is 3 months.

Last night I woke up with the sharpest pain around the right side of my big toe nail. There is no nail there due to a fungus infection.?

Injury?: Have you injured your toe in some way? If not then watch it for signs of infections such as redness or swelling. If you develop these then see a doctor right away.

I have toenail fungus on both big toes. Also, the both nail are a little loose. What should I do? Finally, I have space on the side of each nail

A foot doc: Will cut as much of the fungus away as they can. They can then offer you different treatments to get rid if the fungus. Oral lamisil (terbinafine) has the best success rate. Lasers are expensive, and if they don't work you may be upset that you spent money.

Just found a bump on the side of my right pinky toe. I also have warts covered with duct tap. How soon before I can distill it from a fungus or wart?

Just found a bump on the side of my right pinky toe. I also have warts covered with duct tap. How soon before I can distill it from a fungus or wart?

Right now: If you have active warts and a new bump on the skin of the toe, chances are you have another wart. Look closely. Do skin lines go through it or around it? If the latter, it's a wart. I don't recommend duct tape. The reason it reacts with warts is the adhesive was not meant for skin contact and causes an allergic reaction. Thus can be severe in some individals. See a podiatrist.

Sudden onset of throbbing, swelling and pain around the cuticle and sides of toenail. I do have fungus under the nail…never been this painful. Ingrown?

Sudden onset of throbbing, swelling and pain around the cuticle and sides of toenail. I do have fungus under the nail…never been this painful. Ingrown?

Yikes.: It sounds like your toe is definitely inflamed, possibly infected and potentially ingrown. Best thing to do is have it examined to determine your problem and the proper treatment. The fungus under the nail could be a contributing factor in your problem.

I have a black spot on the side of my big toe nail. I got a nail fungus a few years ago at a salon.... Tried topical and even pills... Now this spot?

Differential: Diagnosis would include fungus, dried blood or worse case scenerio something serious like melanoma. It is more likely on of the first two but since melanoma is dangerous warrants it be checked out.

Operated fungus ball in left maxillary sinus. Now, postnasal discharge (~ right side) in stomach and left lung. Big spleen. Smelly urine. What could be?

Operated fungus ball in left maxillary sinus. Now, postnasal discharge (~ right side) in stomach and left lung. Big spleen. Smelly urine. What could be?

See doctor: Fungal ball in the sinus is not expected to cause urinary, abdominal, or urinary symptoms. If this affects your lung, then one needs to rule out the presence of fungal ball in the lung also. With the large spleen, I suspect that you are having a systemic disease and this requires tests and examination to clarify. By the way, the odor of urine is not usually diagnostic of anything.

Need to be checked: You should have it checked by your doctor or a podiatrist. It may be inflammation like gout or an infection and as it is getting worse, you should waste no time and seek medical attention asap.

Splinter on front ride side of foot 3 months ago. Can't find anything with needle, painful when touching around the place and when gently striking over it or when I hit something. Any danger?

Splinter treatment: If the foot hurts where the splinter penetrated 3 months ago, you may have a small foreign body reaction occurring. Your body may try to "wall off" the splinter by creating a scarred mass of tissue around the foreign item. This may hurt when you touch it. You may need an x ray for better diagnosis and a small procedure to remove the mass under local anesthesia.
