Unlikely: A pink, measles-like rash can occur and is more likely if one takes the medicines Ampicillin or Amoxicillin for a throat infection. Doctor can examine: Rashes are hard to describe in words. Usually, a doctor has to look at a rash to decide on a cause. For common rashes such as eczema, mild reactions to plants or chemicals (the soap?), excessive dryness, or little itchy bumps, the doctor may recommend over-the-counter cortisone cream two or three times a day for 1 week. For fungal infections like t. Versicolor, selenium shampoo may be recommended. ...Read more

11 year old has daily diarrhea for past couple weeks. Also had full body rash (small raised bumps) which cleared up last week. What's going on?

It depends on what: you mean by diarrhea (true diarrhea is multiple loose, watery stools as opposed to just loose stool once/day). If it is true diarrhea, she may need stool cultures to rule out a parasitic or bacterial infection. Any fever? blood in stool?vomiting?history of travel?changes in diet? The rash may be part of a viral infection, reaction to food, or unrelated. Please discuss with her doctor. ...Read more

Common dilemma is that viruses often cause harmless rashes (exanthums), but drugs used to treat secondary ear infections, sinusitis, etc. can be serious. Appearance, timing of rash is important. Recognition by a seasoned provider can be enormously reassuring. Allergists are called upon for diffucult rashes and can test for certain drug allergies. ...Read more

My 16 month old developed a full body rash after taking amoxycillin for pneumonia. Should i keep her off it in the future if she needs antibiotics?

I would: For most kids this is a cosmetic nuisance rather than a risk, but it could become more of a problem later. If ampicillin or its close relatives were the best selection for a serious illness, there are ways it can be used in a hospital setting. This involves a specialised desensitization/monitoring.Luckily we have many alternatives for common infections.Make sure the reaction makes it into the chart ...Read more

Allergic reaction: Amoxicillin is the most common antibiotic to cause drug rashes. The rashes include hives or another rash known as a dermal hypersensitivity reaction. Skin biopsy, CXR: Much testing may be required to find the answer to this symptom. If blood work is normal, I recommend a skin biopsy and a chest x ray as the next steps. I also feel that evaluation at the nearest medical center by a medical (as opposed to cometic) dermatologist is in order, if possible. With diligence and a caring MD the cause is likely to be found. ...Read more
