Vascular phenomenon: Migraines are caused by changes in the blood flow in your head. Ocular migraines are caused by a reduction of flow to the back of your brain. They last 15-60 minutes and resolve without treatment. These symptoms are typically not treated as they resolve. If you have them frequently, then migraine prophylaxis may be used. Increased stress, decreased sleep, dehydration, low blood sugar, changes in caffeine, certain times of the month, dietary culprits, barometric pressure changes, bright flickering lights. Unknown: It might be turkey or seasonings or preservatives. You could try only eating one type of deli meat at a time for a few days and record results. Read more

See your doctor: Ocular and neurological migraines can mimic all manner of problems, including those normally caused by strokes.

As you describe persistent visual changes, it would be a very good idea to have both an ophthalmologist and a neurologist see you, to make sure nothing else is going on that might need treatment.

I do not know of anyone losing their vision or the symptoms staying permanently. They can recur though. Sometimes there are triggers; the most common are stress, caffeine, chocolate, red wine, food with sulfates, some medications, alcohol, reflections of light. Read more
