Rib healing: No real good studies on rib fractures. They can hurt for weeks or longer depending on how bad the fractures are. Usually walking around is good. ...Read more
A fracture is a broken bone. As there is cartilage at the end of many bones at the joint, a fracture may also include a break in the cartilage. Fractures and broken bones are the same thing. It seems that many believe that a "fracture" is a lesser injury or an incomplete break in the bone, but this is not correct. Fractures may be displaced or ...Read more

How much longer for my T11 fractured rib to heal? It has been almost 2.5 years and I don't know how to speed this up. X-ray showed healing normally.
2.5 years?: Did you really mean 2 and one half years? If it has not healed by now, it is not likely to heal on its own unless something is done. Even a very silly healing fracture would have healed by now. This is a nonunion and not a delayed Union. Talk to your doctor about other options. ...Read more
Pain is worse: For a few days, followed by 6-8 weeks for healing. After a few days the worst pain usually is gone and it just aches with deep breathing and certain motions and many don't need pan meds. It is important to make sure you are getting a good deep breath and don't develop other issue and to determine the cause or quality of the break with xrays. ....Just don't assume. ...Read more

How long does it take for a fractured rib take to heal on a 1-2 month old infant? And would there be any physical signs such as bruising on the skin?
Red flag: I must know whether this was an injury sustained during birth, and whether the diagnosis is made by a trusted radiologist. A rib fracture in an infant is deeply concerning for inflicted trauma. I would discuss this with a trusted physician / child health care team. Often we do not truly know even those closest to us. For your sake & junior's, address this. ...Read more
Weeks to months: The healing time of fractures in ribs and other bones depends on displacement of fracture fragments. If no displacement fracture usually heals the quickest. Rib fractures if not displaced are one of fastest healing fractures. Hairline fracture is nondisplaced fracture. Healing begins in 10 days and usually compete by couple months. ...Read more
If a fracture doesn't heal, it is called a nonunion. For this injury, I typically obtain a plain xray first to evaluate, but more than likely, a ct scan is needed to look for the nonunion (and any other injuries).
If the nonunion is painful, you may benefit from surgery. There are several centers across the us that perform this type of surgery, but not many. ...Read more
Ouch!: Rib fractures can be extremely painful. We used to prescribe chest binders - a wrap that goes around your chest - to help support the area, but no longer do so because it's been found that they don't help healing or pain much. You can get some pain relief by taking anti-inflammatory medications (like ibuprofen). Be sure to not take more than recommended. Ice applied to the area might help too. ...Read more

Two ribs fractured my fibula and dislocated my ankle, how long will it be before I'm good enough to play sports?
It sounds as though you had quite the accident. Fractured ribs are painful enough, the fracture/dislocation of an ankle can have long rehabilitation schedules. In addition, of course, it also depends on what sports you want to play. You most likely had surgery on the ankle. I would ask the surgeon for his opinion, he would know better than anyone else.
Good luck. ...Read more
