Alkaline Phosphatase (Definition)

The normal range is 20 to 140 iu/l.[12] high levels can indicate active bone formation occurring as alp is a byproduct of osteoblast activity (such as the case in paget's disease of bone). Levels are also elevated in people with untreated celiac ...Read more

Foods to treat low alkaline phosphatase?

How should I lower my alkaline phosphatase?

How should I lower my alkaline phosphatase?

Elevated Alk Phos: Question would be why is your alkaline phosphatase elevated? ? If the levels are abnormal, there is usually a reason. Treating the symptoms without understanding why you have an elevated level is counter-productive. You should see your primary care physicians and have labs re-checked. If it's persistently high, then there should be referral to a rheumatologist or orthopedic surgeon. Read more

Medicine for high alkaline phosphatase levels?

Wrong approach: Alkaline phosphatase is a lab value to tell a physician what is happening, not a medical problem to treat. It can be high just because you're growing (teens tend to be maybe 5x the upper limit of the reference range). About 5% of older folks have a high alk phos for "no reason", presumably paget's of the bone that never becomes evident; nonfasting samples may have it from the intestine. Read more

How can I cure excess of alkaline phosphatase?

Find the cause: If you're growing or pregnant, your alkaline phosphatase will be way-high. About 5% of older folks have high alkaline phosphatase that never causes trouble. Many folks get a high alk phos just from having eaten. If you are otherwise healthy, stop worrying about it. Read more

What does alkaline phosphatase do in the body?

Bone turnover: It is an enzyme that is active in the process of bone turnover; so it will be elevated in situations in which bone turnover is high, even in conditions where there is metastatic disease to the bone. Patients with pagers disease have a very high bone turnover rate and a markedly elevated alkaline phosphatase. Read more

Need help. Is 150 u/l alkaline phosphatase really high?

It depends: Alkaline phosphatase comes from different sources and depending on the site of the lesion, it may be really high. Please note that all lab results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the test is usually in the best position to do that. Read more

If I have low alkaline phosphatase what does that mean?

Nothing, on just one: Test. Have it repeated after a couple of weeks. An isolated result like that means very little. However a high result indicate a bone or a liver problem, but, as far as I know, a low result means nothing. Read more

What do you know about high alkaline phosphatase levels?

Plenty: You describe yourself as a 73 year old lady and I'm betting you feel well but have an alk phos a bit high on your routine chemical profile. Many folks, depending on blood type, shoot the alk phos up after eating. Maybe 5% of folks your age have a high alk phos because of subclinical paget's disease which we aren't going to treat or worry about. "treat the person, not the labs.". Read more

Does high alkaline phosphatase indicate than I am growing?

Does high alkaline phosphatase indicate than I am growing?

I doubt it: At age 38? I'd hope not -- you don't want to shop for new clothes. Many folks spike their alk phos after eating, so often it means nothing. If it's real, and it's more than a wee bit above reference range, it may mean anything from pregnancy to space-occupying lesions of the liver to subtle paget's of the bone (very common), but it almost never worth working up by itself. What are the concerns for having high alkaline phosphatase?

Liver or bone: Answer can depend on situation. Pregnancy can raise alk phos level. In general, however, the source is either liver or bone and the reason should be determined, since the causes can be treated. There are too many possibilities to list and your doctor will have to determine the source, possibly by doing additional testing. Liver may mean hepatitis or bile duct blockage. Bone can be paget's disease. Read more
