Yes: Banding is a good first step. A small, thin rubber band is placed on the dilated vein (hemorrhoid) and the vein dies off and drys up. This works fo many people. Since he is growing and playing contact sports, he can burn off calories faster than those who don't, and thus needs to take in more. But in general, we eat too much anyway.
