Absolutely: The plantar fascia ligament plays an important part of the foot arch structure as do the bones. If you fracture a bone considered part of the arch then it could place more stress on the plantar fascia ligament for support. Not as supportive: It is okay to wear athletic shoes without orthotics, but you will not get the same level of support for your arch. Custom orthotics conform to your arch and can help limit excessive pronation. The best combination for support is to wear custom orthotics with a stable athletic shoe. Foot Drop Shoes: The only shoe type I have ever found useless for some of my patients with drop foot is some stable heel.
