You should visit: A doctor and have it checked out. At minimum, you likely should be wearing an ankle brace. If you injure the ankle and it is unstable and you continue to walk on it you are not allowing it to heal properly. ...Read more

Home therapy needed: I have to assume there are no broken bones. If this is not 100% true then a medical evaluation is needed before you do anything. Otherwise, by utilizing hot and cold contrast bath's this will help the bruising. You can either use a tub or just hot towel or heating pad and cold pack. Start with the hot for 3-4 minutes and then immediately cold for 3-4 minutes. Repeat 4 times, twice daily. ...Read more

Ankle sprain: Normal healing of a sprained ankle takes several weeks (on average). If its a chronically sprained ankle with constant pain and instability, it will take longer than a "normal" sprain. Yes, a sprain can get worse. Usually 3-4 weeks of rest, icing, antiinflammatory meds (like advil (ibuprofen) or motrin), bracing or compressing wraps, with or without physical therapy should be normal. It's : It's impossible to tell whether you have a sprain or a fracture without an x-ray, so yes, you'll need to see someone to have it evaluated and x-rayed. In the meantime, i would not apply any heat, as heat will increase the swelling. Ice is ok, but now at 3 days later, it's doubtful ice will help much. Also, i was lay off the ibuprofen. If it is fractured, Ibuprofen delays and hinders fracture healing. Take tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain, but go see a doctor, either a podiatrist or orthopedic surgeon. Feel better. Stop icing.: Temperature changes after an injury, are always concerning. Generally the affected area heats up, as a prelude to the inflammatory cycle and healing. Becoming cold can be due to nerve or vascular damage. This can be temporary of longer.
