Shingles: Nausea and anorexia are not likely to be related to his episode of herpes zoster (shigles). He should see a doctor and be fully evaluated. Something may be going on that made him susceptible to getting shingles. ...Read more

Shingles (Herpes Zoster) (Definition)

A painful blistering skin rash caused by the chickenpox virus (varicella zoster). Early treatment with antiviral medication (within 72 hours) lowers the risk of post-herpetic neuralgia, which is lingering skin pain after the rash disappears. ...Read more

Allergy, intolerance, or viral? I get vertigo when I eat nuts, chocolate and caffeine, and basic dizziness from other foods. Started after shingles.

Inner ear issues?: If the nerves related to your inner ear get swollen they could easily result in feelings of vertigo/dizziness. Perhaps the foods are causing the nerves to swell? Post nasal drip and eustachian tube dysfunction might do it. Chinese medicine or cranial osteopathy might help. Diazepam is a western medication that would effectively treat symptoms. ...Read more

What should I avoid when staying with someone who has shingles?

What should I avoid when staying with someone who has shingles?

Depends on immunity: Herpes zoster is the chicken pox virus, so a person with zoster can touch any normal person (not immunocompromised, not on prednisone, not a baby) who has immunity to the virus from a past vaccination or a past case of chicken pox or zoster. Otherwise, the zoster patient can wait until all his rash is fully healed (although he is probably not contagious once his scabs are all dry and healing). ...Read more

I got the shingles 3 days ago. Should I still make food for a baby shower?

I got the shingles 3 days ago. Should I still make food for a baby shower?

You decide: Shingles differs a lot from chickenpox. Only the debris from the weeping sores will carry any contagious particles. It is not in your saliva & does not get airborne in a cough. As long as you can be sure not to contaminate any of the material you make, and cover the sores while visiting, you are fine to share & enjoy the occasion. ...Read more

How to avoid getting shingles from a family member?

Not Contagious: Generally, only the weeping, oozing fluid from the acute outbreak on the skin is mildly contagious and then only to those with no immunity to Chicken Pox (varicella). This is most significant if a pregnant woman without immunity could transmit the virus to her fetus and cause an Intrauterine infection which would probably cause injury to the susceptible fetus. ...Read more

How can I avoid spreading shingles virus on me or others?

Unlikely: If the person you are in direct contact with has previously had chickenpox or has had the varicella-zoster vaccine they will not be at risk. In the absence of those things, or in patients who may have their immune system compromised, transmission may occur. ...Read more

You can't: You can't get shingles if you've never had the chicken pox, unless you have been vaccinated for the chicken pox. Shingles should not be contagious, however if you have never been vaccinated or had the disease, you should avoid that person or at least consult with your physician. ...Read more

I have shingles on my hand and work directly with food and have my wash my hands frequently throughout the day. How do I work with this?

I have shingles on my hand and work directly with food and have my wash my hands frequently throughout the day. How do I work with this?

Shingles: Shingles is a blistering viral infection (herpes zoster). Check with your doctor. You should not be working with food if you have active shingles on your hand because shingles can lead to chicken pox in people that are not immune to it. The blisters settle within 10 days to 3 weeks, and are non-contagious when they have dried up. If they have dried up, use plenty of hand cream after washing. ...Read more

Can salmonella food poisoning have any serious long term effects after treated/cured? Can it lead to different problems? Ex: chickenpox into shingles?

Can salmonella food poisoning have any serious long term effects after treated/cured? Can it lead to different problems? Ex: chickenpox into shingles?

No long term effects: Once in a while, people become carriers of Salmonella for a few weeks or months after they get over the initial infection. However, this is rare and harmless. It creates risk for other persons potentially exposed to your feces, but that's prevented by everyday, standard hygiene, like hand washing after toilet. So don't worry about this at all. ...Read more

I did not have chicken pox as a child but have had shingles as an adult. I am on enbrel (etanercept). Should I avoid contact with people with shingles?

Not necessary: Although you do not remember having had symptomatic chickenpox as a child you must have gotten it since shingles (herpes zoster) is a recurrence of the varicella zoster virus infection. Once you have this you have it for life. Am surprised that you have not been advised to have the vaccine. In any event you don't have to avoid individuals with shingles. ...Read more

What are the forbidden foods (if any) for someone who is suffering from Herpes Zoster?

None: Food choices are very seldom the key to the management of any illness, other than the nutritional disease. Being sick is difficult enough without superstition. While you're recovering from zoster, eat sensibly. Generally, anyone does well to avoid much of the very sugary, the very greasy, or the very salty stuff. Best wishes. ...Read more

Does herpes zoster spreads if come in touch with water? Can I take a bath or should I avoid contact with water in affected area?

Bath, shower is fine: Bathing and showering is fine, because a person with shingles (herpes zoster outbreak on part of his body) won't spread it to another part of his body via bathing or showering. The outbreak on the skin comes from INSIDE the body, not due to viruses entering the skin from the outside. ...Read more
