High renal loss of potassium & magnesium in urine. Blood potassium always at low end of range. Extreme weakness, nausea, numb. What would you think??
Inherited vs med vs?: The rare inherited Gitelman & Bartter syndromes can cause a loss of potassium & magnesium (in Gitelman & in some cases of Bartter's) in the urine, which can cause fatigue and cramps. Some meds can do this, such as the blood pressure med Hydrochlorothiazide. For symptoms, potassium typically has to be well below normal range. Can you get electrolyte disturbances ie low blood calcium and/or high blood potassium level While taking Magnesium Citrate 50mg 3x day Migraine Aura?
Mag citrate: This supplement is too low of a dose to cause changes in blood calcium or potassium. Also your body has independent mechanism to regulate these electrolytes. You kidney regulate potassium levels and your body regulates calcium levels via PTH levels which affect intestional aborption, bone resorption and intestinal absortion. Mag Citrate should not alter this. ...Read more
Sodium: 142, Potassium 3.7, Magnesium 2.5, C02 34 (High), Chloride 105. are these normal? Can these levels cause an episode of V-tach??
Mostly normal. Lung?: The electrolytes look mostly normal. The CO2 (actually bicarbonate) level is slightly high, which may be "just you" (no significance), or may be related to some developing lung or kidney problems. In any case, I wouldn't look to the electrolytes as being the cause of VTach. The problem probably lies elsewhere (lung is possible, as is heart disease). TTYD or use HealthTap Prime for more clarity. GL ...Read more

What causes a low blood calcium level? Mine is 8.5 and I already take potassium and magnesium. Do they have anything to do with it? Vit d 57.6
A calcium of: 8.5 is still normal. The calcium level is "total" calcium, of which 1/2 is bound to proteins. Have your doctor check your "ionized calcium" which is a much more accurate determination of whether your calcium is low or not. Low parathyroid hormone can cause low calcium, as can certain kidney diseases, and other problems. Make sure you are on calcium and d. Your d level is already ok. Check w/docto. ...Read more

Switching from pill to liquid form of magnesium and potassium. I'm told the body absorbs much more from liquid. Should I maintain dosage or take less?
Supplements?: If you potassium (k) and magnesium (m) are normal, you need no supplements. The body does not care if you take liquid k or m, or pills. Patients with m deficiency have low k levels that cannot be corrected until the m is normal. You are not on a diuretic that causes both k and m loss in the urine. Before you continue taking the k and m supplements, make sure you need to. Get a blood test. ...Read more
