Food Molds For Pureed Foods
Yes: I would question why so soon. In previous years when homemade formula from cow milk was routine, early feeding was necessary to improve nutrition. Now we understand breast or formula alone is fine & allows baby to develop motor skills that improve their transition to solids. I like to start @ 6m & making your own is a great way to avoid some of the additives & preservatives in commercial products. ...Read more
It starts in 24-48: A general rule of thumb is that you should wash the dishes and wipe/clean the sink at least once a day if you wish to prevent mold growing on your used bowls and plates. When dishes are stacked on each other they aren't able to dry out which promotes mold growth. Rinsing dishes right after helps prevent. Keep surfaces free of organic material/food which mold requires to grow. Stay well:) ...Read more

Pt can go back to eating regular food instead of pureed food. But still has to drink thickened water. Reasons for both?
What did the doc say: This type of dietary change is a direct reflection of the clinical circumstances that resulted in the change. Was there a stroke? Recent surgery? Parkinson's disease? Prolonged hospital stay? Etc. In the absence of the reason the diet was changed, commenting on why is fruitless at best and malpractice at worst. You need to discuss with the doc who prescribed the diet. ...Read more
Can draining food over a pan which has been soaking for twelve hours be harmful to health? Can mold get onto the food from the pan?
Your question is: Ambiguous. Did you drain excess fluid from the food into the pan or put food into the pan when it had dirty water in it? You shouldn't cook food in water that has been sitting in a dirty pan for 12 hours. But its okay if you washed the pan thoroughly with dish detergent and hot water before using it to prepare food. And YES, mold can grow anywhere food's been sitting around long enough. ...Read more

Let me rephrase my five month old does not seem interested in trying baby foods purees not solids sorry. What age should they start to be interested?
Too early: Babies do not need solids in the first year.Formula or breast milk are total nutrition. As a culture, we generally begin offering solids as a puree as soon as they sit up, which is about the time their tongue thrust fades. Six months is the earliest I start and I let the kid decide when they are ready. You may offer an item a dozen times before they decide to try it. Be patient. ...Read more

Difficulty w/ swallo: Somebody must have thought the person your concerned about has difficulty with chewing and or swallowing his food. Then he might get food into his lungs and get an aspiration pneumonia. So he is being fed like a child. I don't know if he has dentures yet but that would be another consideration in feeding issues. No risk: Swallowing HIV is low risk. For example, HIV is rarely transmitted by oral sex, even with swallowing of HIV infected semen or vaginal fluid. Of course there is never such a risk with commercial baby foods. ...Read more

I thought molded foods could trigger respiratory problems. It's okay to eat strawberries that are surrounded by other strawberries infected with gray?
Mouldy strawberries: You are right, that some moulds can trigger asthma or breathing problems in sensitive people. Consuming mouldy foods could have consequences as well- so I do not recommend that. Sometimes there are a few mouldy strawberries among a pack- you can pick those out and eat the rest IF THERE IS NO SIGN of mould on the other ones. Otherwise, I wouldn't take the risk and just throw them all out. ...Read more
