The skin on my forehead is flaking and now I am getting itchy red spots appearing. These spots crust over? Could it be a food allergy?
Unlikely due to food: Typically food allergies present with skin or GI symptoms. The skin symptoms are usually hives and itching especially near the mouth or lips. Forehead area would be less likely. Crusting over lesions should make one consider possibilities other than food allergies.See 3 more doctor answers

If food allergy prick test is negative (mild redness) and blood rast test negative is it mean you are not allergic to foods? So y get reaction to foods
Not 100%: If both tests are negative, the chance of being allergic to that food is very very small. However when the history of a food allergy is strong, and the tests were negative, I often ask the patient to bring in the fresh food for the testing instead of relying on commercial food extracts. If the person is still quite concerned over it a challenge test can be done at the office.See 1 more doctor answer

Yes, helpful: I agree. Skin prick testing to evaluate for food allergies can be very helpful, and can help direct dietary restriction. It is always used in clinical context to support an adverse reaction to a food. The size of the reaction will indicate the likelihood of an adverse reaction and not if you will have anaphylaxis.See 1 more doctor answer
Unlimited, but...: There are many (>100) foods available, but as it turns out, the vast majority of patients are allergic to a limited number. The "top 8" foods are cow's milk, hen's egg, wheat, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish. Screening for dozens of random foods rarely is helpful and may lead to an overly restricted diet. Review your story with the ordering provider and tailor accordingly.See 1 more doctor answer
Relation to food?: Sounds like "oral allergy syndrome." it is an allergic reaction to usually fresh fruits, nuts, & veggies. Most folks have a history of allergic rhinitis-hay fever. It is considered a "true" allergy with the scientific name-ige type 1 mediated response. 60% of sufferers also have a cross reaction between foods and inhalative allergens. Elimination diet followed by food challenge makes the diagnosis.
Nothing is perfect: No test is 100% reliable - neither skin testing nor blood testing. That's why allergists try to order relevant tests selected based on a comprehensive medical history and physical examination. The results must be interpreted & used as clues to a solution. They're not an answer in themselves. I'm frequently called by doctors who order allergy tests & then want me interpret them over the phone.See 2 more doctor answers
Avoid the food: The best current treatment for food allergies is avoiding that particular food. After avoidance, antihistamines can decrease itching associated with food allergies. The use of steroid creams or ointments may help, but should be monitored by a physician. An allergist can assist in identifying the specific food trigger.
