Allergies (Definition)

Allergies occur when your immune system is triggered by envirionmental factors it should ignore--for example, pollen in the air, or dander on a cat or dog--and creates cells to fight against them. An allergic reaction typically causes itching, congestion, or drainage, and ...Read more

Angioedema!: Some people with stress release histamine in the skin. When scratching occurs, red welts occur. Try combining an over the counter drug like Claritin and zantac (ranitidine) (2x 75mg). I bet you get relief!

The skin on my forehead is flaking and now I am getting itchy red spots appearing. These spots crust over? Could it be a food allergy?

Unlikely due to food: Typically food allergies present with skin or GI symptoms. The skin symptoms are usually hives and itching especially near the mouth or lips. Forehead area would be less likely. Crusting over lesions should make one consider possibilities other than food allergies.

Red itchy bumps with white circle around them on legs and stomach. Look like tiny hives. Food allergy cause? Would I see a derm?

Red itchy bumps with white circle around them on legs and stomach. Look like tiny hives. Food allergy cause? Would I see a derm?

How long?: How long have you had this problem and how long does each bump stays around? If the problem cannot be controlled with antihistamine or lasts more than 8 weeks, consider seeing an allergist. Does heat, stress, or exercise trigger it? If so, it may just be a condition known as cholinergic urticaria. Tell us more about your condition.

Many causes: I would suggest avoiding these foods for two weeks and reassess the condition of your skin at that time. Topical products are available at your pharmacy for dry scalp and flaking which can be tried after the two week period or beforehand.

If food allergy prick test is negative (mild redness) and blood rast test negative is it mean you are not allergic to foods? So y get reaction to foods

If food allergy prick test is negative (mild redness) and blood rast test negative is it mean you are not allergic to foods? So y get reaction to foods

Not 100%: If both tests are negative, the chance of being allergic to that food is very very small. However when the history of a food allergy is strong, and the tests were negative, I often ask the patient to bring in the fresh food for the testing instead of relying on commercial food extracts. If the person is still quite concerned over it a challenge test can be done at the office.

Are skin prick tests accurate for food allergies?

Yes, helpful: I agree. Skin prick testing to evaluate for food allergies can be very helpful, and can help direct dietary restriction. It is always used in clinical context to support an adverse reaction to a food. The size of the reaction will indicate the likelihood of an adverse reaction and not if you will have anaphylaxis.

How many food allergies can be detected by a skin allergy test?

How many food allergies can be detected by a skin allergy test?

Unlimited, but...: There are many (>100) foods available, but as it turns out, the vast majority of patients are allergic to a limited number. The "top 8" foods are cow's milk, hen's egg, wheat, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish. Screening for dozens of random foods rarely is helpful and may lead to an overly restricted diet. Review your story with the ordering provider and tailor accordingly.

Red and burning in mouth area? Is it food allergies?

Red and burning in mouth area? Is it food allergies?

Relation to food?: Sounds like "oral allergy syndrome." it is an allergic reaction to usually fresh fruits, nuts, & veggies. Most folks have a history of allergic rhinitis-hay fever. It is considered a "true" allergy with the scientific name-ige type 1 mediated response. 60% of sufferers also have a cross reaction between foods and inhalative allergens. Elimination diet followed by food challenge makes the diagnosis.

Can skin prick testing for food allergies be 100% reliable?

Can skin prick testing for food allergies be 100% reliable?

Nothing is perfect: No test is 100% reliable - neither skin testing nor blood testing. That's why allergists try to order relevant tests selected based on a comprehensive medical history and physical examination. The results must be interpreted & used as clues to a solution. They're not an answer in themselves. I'm frequently called by doctors who order allergy tests & then want me interpret them over the phone.

Skin rashes on face from a food allergy. What do I take for this?

Skin rashes on face from a food allergy. What do I take for this?

Avoid the food: The best current treatment for food allergies is avoiding that particular food. After avoidance, antihistamines can decrease itching associated with food allergies. The use of steroid creams or ointments may help, but should be monitored by a physician. An allergist can assist in identifying the specific food trigger.
