Folic Acid Hair Loss
Hair loss, otherwise known as alopecia, can be caused by different reasons, including damage to the hair shaft or follicles or fungal infections. There are two main types of alopecia. Alopecia areata occurs when the body's immune system attacks hair follicles and causes hair to fall out. Androgenetic (or androgenic) alopecia, on the other hand, is an inherited form of hair loss. In men, this is called male pattern hair loss; in women, it is called ...Read more
My husband was told taking folic acid could prevent and help hair loss. Is this true and is it safe to take 400mcg daily?
Previous ida. Now high B12 and folate (folic acid) levels. Ferritin result is not back. Significant hair loss and sob? Could high folate (folic acid) mask B12 deficiency? Thx
Masks anemia only: High folate (folic acid) can mask megaloblastic anemia caused by B12 deficiency but does not affect B12 levels. The high B12 levels you have are proof that you don't have B12 deficiency. I don't know what ida is. Hair loss ; sob can have many causes. It sounds like you are being evaluated for possible causes. ...Read more

No: One's hair will be "as good as it gets", if one eats a normal, healthy, balanced diet (which will contain all the folate (folic acid) and biotin needed for normal living). If a person has a rare disorder causing a deficiency of folate (folic acid) or of biotin, she can work out the details with her doctor. Normal people do not need extra doses of supplements, but 1 daily multivitamin or 1 prenatal vitamin is okay to take. ...Read more

For faster hair growth can I consume 5000mg biotin , prenatal or folic acid , multivitamins, 3000mg fish oil pills daily? Is is safe?
Yes, safe but...: Taking all of the things you mention is quite safe. However, there is no guarantee this will result in faster hair growth; if you are deficient in any of those (which is actually quite common) then it should help somewhat; if not deficient then it won't do much for your hair but may still have other health benefits.
