The top/back of my mouth hurts. Mainly when I swallow. It feels like it did when I had tonsillitis but I had a tonsillectomy 2 years ago. Any advice?

Pharyngitis: Throat infections are quite common-even if you did have a tonsillectomy. Different viruses and bacteria can cause these symptoms. A throat culture or rapid test can help find out the cause. Once that is done, the treatment can be targeted towards that. In the meantime, hot lemon tea with honey, throat lozenges, even tylenol (acetaminophen) would be helpful. See a doc for the diagnostic test and targeted treatment ...Read more

I just had a tonsillectomy, should the holes left over by the removed tonsils be black inside. And how long does it take for the new holes to seal up?

Tonsil eschar: This is obviously a crust in the tonsillar fossa called an eschar. The fact that his black usually is because the surgeon utilized heat to stop the bleeding when they took the tonsils out. This could be with a laser or with cautery. It usually takes 2 to 3 weeks for this to disappear completely and it always does. In the meantime you should be eating soft food to help wash this away. The muscles around the tonsils are sore from the recent surgery, and it's impossible to move your tongue without disturbing these areas - it's likely the cramping will decrease in time, but check in with your surgeon. ...Read more
