Ttc & stopped takin fluoxetine. Is there any way of distinguishing the difference between recent emotional changes being from early pregnancy symptom?
Please follow up: Depending on why you were taking the fluoxetine, you could have resurgence of symptoms. Early pregnancy by itself does not cause depression, anxiety disorder, panic attacks, etc -- but it can exacerbate underlying tendencies. Please follow up regularly with a psychiatrist to make sure you stay as healthy as possible in your pregnancy, & to monitor for any issues so they don't get worse. ...Read more
Will depression medication such as Prozac affect pregnancy tests? Also can they make periods lighter?
No I do not think so: Medicines like Prozac (fluoxetine) are not known to affect pregnancy testing or bleeding significantly. I found this article to help answer your question about bleeding- it appears there is no association. "Serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressants and abnormal bleeding: a review for clinicians and a reconsideration of mechanisms." J Clin Psychiatry. 2010 Dec;71(12):1565-75. ...Read more
Ask your doctor: There's no right 'generally speaking' kind of answer for this question. You really should speak to your doctor about the risk vs. Benefits of continuing ssri or Lamictal during pregnancy to you and to the unborn child, as well as the risks vs. Benefits of leaving your symptoms controlled. A lot will depend on how severe your illness (? Psych/neuro) gets when untreated with meds. ...Read more

Husband and I are thinking of trying to conceive baby #3. I've been on 20mg prozac for 3 months and don't want to stop. Is it ok during pregnancy?
Probably : There's debate in the field, but Prozac appears to be relatively safe. If you had been on it much longer, my recommendation to continue it would have been stronger. If you can get off it, it is safer for the baby. This is always a difficult decision. The latest data I've read is that a mother's depression is no longer considered dangerous to the fetus, unless it interferes with mother's nutrition. ...Read more
