Blood pressure is a measurement of the force placed on the blood vessels and is comprised of the "systolic" pressure (the top number on a blood pressure meter) which is the peak pressure when the heart is pumping, and the "diastolic" pressure (the bottom number on a blood pressure meter) which is the pressure during the resting phase ...Read more
It depends: It is normal for ones blood pressure to vary from moment to moment. Check your pressure each morning, sitting and standing, for 1 or 2 weeks. The major determinant of a significant change usually is the amount of salt one ingests (for example, the day after a salty meal, one expects a significant rise in blood pressure). If ones pressure is consistently greater than 125 systolic, see your dr. ...Read more
BP variation: Yes. BP changes with every heart beat. This is controlled by many systems in your body. The goal of this regulation is to keep blood flow to your brain constant. BP tends to go down when you go to sleep and be higher in AM than PM. Best way to learn this in yourself is to take your own BP and observe. It is normal for it to vary by at least 40/20 around the clock. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
BP Varies: It is normal for the blood pressure to fluctuate throughout the day. A lot, say 30 points: Pressure varies a lot throughout the day. When a person exercises, the pressure can normally go up from 110/70 to 180/90. Many people have higher pressure in the morning when they wake up and it goes down throughout the day. Pressure is lowest while sleeping, normal is <120/70. Several reasons...: Anxiety, inadequate medication, withdrawl effects from certain medications such as Clonidine which may not be administered frequently enough to last 24 hours and excess salt intake are some of the causes. Rarely conditions such as pheochromocytoma (tumours secreting adrenaline) can cause fluctuating and episodic high blood pressure. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Depends on degree: Mild or moderate changes in blood pressure will usually not produce any symptoms. However, more significant (or sudden) changes in BP may produce symptoms. Low BP may produce dizziness, weakness or malaise, sometimes with blurry or spotty vision, shakiness or even nausea. Conversely, high BP may produce headache or pulsatilla pressure, sometimes with blurry vision or nausea. ...Read more
Probably: Blood pressure fluctuates and there is also the possibility of inaccurate readings from time to time. For long term health maintenance, average blood pressure is probably most important. For more immediate health concerns, it is important to discuss symptoms that may be associated with high or low pressures with your physician so that any untoward effects on health can be assessed. ...Read more
very severe: When BP exceeds 200/120, it approaches a level considered to be a hypertensive urgency or emergency. The symptoms can be angina (chest discomfort), heart failure (shortness of breath), or encephalopathy (confusion and sometimes headache). What are the causes of blood pressure to fluctuate many times during the day from "high" to relatively "normal"?
Not unusual: The blood pressure even when normal varies from minute to minute even. It is not uncommon for a patient in the dr.'s office to have a high blood pressure when that patient first comes in and for it to be lower later. Stress and activity will effect it. It is normal for the blood pressure to go up during and right after exertion. Some patients have more labile BP than others. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Should blood pressure be lower or equal to 120/80 throughout the day? I heard its normal to fluctuate. How would you know if you have high blood?
Blood pressure: Blood pressure is dynamic and is constantly adjusting. The 120/80 is sort of an average normal, a range of 90 to 140 systolic and 60 to 90 diastolic is not unusual. When the blood pressure gets more than 140 at rest or 160 with exercise we begin to worry about hypertension. When the measured blood pressure is most of the time over 140 systolic, this is abnormal, when its over 90 diastolic abnormal ...Read more

The : The most important cause to rule out in situations like this is the presence of a tumor of the adrenal gland, called a pheochromocytoma. Even with these symptoms such a tumor is rarely found. The diagnosis can usually be made by analysis of a 24 hour urine collection or by blood tests. Other possible causes of these types of symptoms include: panic attacks, labile hypertension, anxiety, hyperthyroidism, migraine headaches, central nervous system lesions, seizures, carcinoid syndrome, drugs (including cocaine, lsd, amphetamines, and others), and tyrosine ingestion combined with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (which are a type of antidepressant drug). In many patients with episodic hypertension in whom a pheochromocytoma is not found the cause remains unknown, and treatment is difficult. The symptoms most likely involve activation of the sympathetic system, but the cause of sympathetic activation is unclear. It may stem from emotional factors that are repressed from conscious awareness. This condition is sometimes called pseudopheochromocytoma, and most often includes rapid elevation of blood pressure; sudden onset of physical symptoms, such as headache, chest pain, dizziness, nausea, palpitations, flushing, and/or sweating; and a lack of emotional causes, such as fear or panic, although fear can occur as a result of the worrisome physical symptoms. Episodes can last from ten minutes to several hours; they can occur several times per day or only once every few months. Between episodes the blood pressure may be normal or mildly elevated. ...Read more
Varies - Often None: High blood pressure or hypertension is without symptoms in the majority of patients. One may have dull headaches, shortness of breath, dizzy spells, or more occasional nose bleeds. The major casualty of hypertension results from the longstanding effects of hypertension on the heart, blood vessels, and kidneys, this more likely when blood pressure is very uncontrolled (>180/120 vs 135/85). ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
May be nothing until: For many years, hypertension is unknown as a silent killer..Because it typically does not have easily recognizable symptoms until late..Such as severe headaches, strokes, heart attacks etc..Chronic hypertension is known to cause atherosclerosis, increases risk of heart attacks/strokes etc..Thus recommended to be treated adequately. So, don't wait for symptoms. Consult your doc early. Good luck. ...Read more
Generally none: In most cases, you cannot feel your elevated BP even though anecdotally, people think they do. In a hypertensive crisis (bp ranging around >200/>110, more likely >240/>120), one may have confusion (encephalopathy), shortness of breath (heart failure) or chest discomfort (angina). Acute renal failure, which you can't feel, also occurs. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
