Cough: Forceful coughing can cause discomfort in muscles in chest/back/abdomen. Usually over the counter analgesics such as acetominophen/ nsaids will help. Ultimately the cough has to go away before the discomfort will go away. ...Read more

Cough (Definition)

The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

Flu symptoms started monday but have not had any symptoms, except for cough for 24 hours. Now temp is starting to creep up again. Is this normal?

Possibly....: Influenza can take up to 7-10 days to completely resolve. However, if the fever is becoming significantly higher, if you start to cough up discolored sputum, if you develop shortness of breath, then you need to be re-evaluated for complications of flu like bacterial pneumonia, bronchitis, etc. Bacterial superinfection is a complication of flu so see your doc if these symptoms develop. ...Read more

Had cold/flu symptoms for 8 days, fever and productive cough stopping sleep for last 3. when should I go to the dr? how to stay asleep?

Mgt: Most uncomplicated viral illnesses should resolve within 10 days. If you have had a fever for more than three days or a prolonged course, I would advise a follow up visit. ...Read more

I've had flu symptoms & bad cough for 3 weeks i started on ab's & ventalin 5 days ago i'm no better should I go back to doctor or wait? How long?

Cough possibility...: The flu is caused by a virus and will complete its course. However, the cough may be related to bronchospasm which should respond to the ventolin inhaler but you may need a steroid inhaler as well to fully treat the bronchospasm. If the cough is no better in 7-10 days from the start of therapy, or if it is worsening, see your doc again. ...Read more

Usually a good sign: As a neurologist used to seeing really nasty stuff- I'd say NOT being able to find anything after a couple of weeks is usually a good sign. Nevertheless, I understand your air of caution. Perhaps, you should keep track of ALL SYMPTOMS on a log. Sometimes, this leads to patterns that your GP can better recognize and organize into something treatable. Make sure you're not overusing OTC meds. ...Read more

Try Elderberry/Homeo: Not sure if she (who is she?) has the flu but this sounds viral. No prescription meds help, if this is the flu i advise elderberry extract: http://bit.Ly/1b6mdi0
homeopathy is my favorite treatment for the flu ; viral coughs. It might be best to consult a homeopath (http://bit.Ly/18bi6nb) but you might be able to find a good remedy with this info: http://bit.Ly/1br6xpo ; http://bit.Ly/h97vwf. ...Read more

Without : Without examining you and possibly getting an x-ray, it's difficult to tell what is going on. However, any cough that worsens, is associated with fever or lasts more than 2-3 weeks should be evaluated by a doctor. Most coughs associated with an upper respiratory infection go away within 1-2 weeks. There are many problems that could be going on - common things being walking pneumonia, bronchitis, allergies or gastroesophageal reflux but less common and more serious causes could be pneumonia, tuberculosis or congestive heart failure. Evaluating your other pertinent symptoms and listening to your lungs can help deliniate the cause of your cough and hopefully get you the treatment you need to feel better. Give your doctor a call. Good luck! ...Read more

Go back!: Since you aren't feeling better and you're having shortness of breath, it's time to go back and be rechecked. You may need a chest x-ray if you haven't already had one. The flu can be very serious, and antibiotics don't help because it's a virus. Anytime you're having difficulty breathing, it's time to see a doctor! ...Read more

14yrold extreme muscle pain everywhere esp in his legs. worse everyday.Nonstop cough.1wk since flu symptoms. Athletic. Feels like he ran a marathon.

Likely viral cause: If the muscle pain correlates with the timing of his flu symptoms, the virus is likely causing the muscle pain. I would recommend he see his doctor for further evaluation to be sure, especially if he is having other cold symptoms. There are some tests that can be done to assess for flu and inflammation of the muscles. If viral, time is what will allow his symptoms to improve. ...Read more

Sounds like a: Viral infection. You can just treat the symptoms if you don't get much worse. Mucinexdm will loosen and help with the cough. Dayquil and nyquil help too . Ibuprofen or aleve (naproxen) for fever or aches. A cool mist humidifier in the room will help too. Did you get a flu shot? ...Read more

Cancer?: Doubtful especially with a normal chest radiograph in the last 6 months. The cough and the left arm are probably 2 separate conditions. I would start with your PCP or see an ENT/pulmonologist for the cough. See an orthopaedic doc for the left arm. ...Read more
