Flu Shot Yesterday
Just got flu shot yesterday after very possibly being exposed the day before. Any way it could work before I get sick? Or is it too late?
Also known as influenza vaccines, flu shots are given out once a year to protect against the flu. The flu shot stimulates the immune system to build antibodies to three or four strains of flu viruses in the hopes that it will offer protection from the current strains present in the community. Each year the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) monitors the strains of Influenza globally and incorporates the appropriate antigens in the new vaccine. For best protection the vaccine ...Read more

I had a flu shot yesterday and today have soreness and some redness around that areA, is this common?
Flu Shot: Flu shot side effects may include: slight swelling, redness or pain at vaccination site. If headache, nausea, fever or muscular pain occur they usually resolve within one to two days. You won't get the flu from a flu shot because the virus either contains inactivated virus or doesn't have virus particles in it. Severe side effects are rare. ...Read more
My 8 year old got her flu shot yesterday and today its red and warm. Is this normal? Should I call the dr or? I'm worried
I had the flu shot yesterday. Later I learned about guillain-barré syndrome. When does this risk pass? What should I watch for? I am 52, male.
Go about Life: You will not get guillain barre' from your flu shot. Wow. That is such an extremely rare event that I am amazed you did not worry about the hundred other more common problems from injections such as skin infection. When my patients get all riled up about an internet diagnosis I try to humor them. When you get this paranoid it is time to put the internet away for a day or two. ...Read more
Got a flu shot yesterday. Arm hurts really bad from it. Any way to ease the pain or does it just have to go away on it's own?
Should I be concerned about an already enlarged left supraclavicular lymph node that has now doubled in size after a flu shot yesterday?
Call doc to be safe: Assuming your flu shot was on the same side, this sounds like a normal reaction to immune stimulation from the vaccine, more prominent than usual because of the previous enlargement. Probably it's nothing to worry about, but call your doctor's office to be sure they agree. Is the cause of the enlarged lymph node known? If not, for sure bring it to your doctor's attention. ...Read more

I am about 5 months pregnant and I got a flu shot yesterday from my ob. But now I have a slight fever and achey all over. What can I do?
Flu shot side: Effects. The flu shot has inactivated virus- so it won't infect you with the flu. If you have reactions to the shot they usually resolve within one to two days. Side effects can include a low grade fever, aches ; pain, and localized swelling, redness and pain at the shot site. Some people have had allergic reactions to the flu vaccine. You can let your OB dr know but it's likely normal side effect. ...Read more
Had a flu shot yesterday morning. No issues since...until now. Just took a warm shower and while washing my hair I felt my back - full of a bumpy rash?
Is the rash itchy?: Or just bumpy? Do you have an allergy to egg products? Depending on type of flu shot with or without preservative, grown on egg medium. If itchy and hot shower could stimulate histamine. Call your doctor who gave it to you if you still have the rash ASAP. If not itchy may be less urgent, but still need to call in. ...Read more
I had a flu shot yesterday. 4 hours later struck with extreme dizziness and sweating. Is that normal?
Maybe: Dizziness and sweating are very vague symptoms with many causes. You should check with your doctor. Flu shots have many proteins (antigens) so that your body will produce antibodies and protect you from the flu. This response includes cytokines, a chemical messenger that can cause symptoms in sensitive people. However, they still should get the vaccine because influenza is much worse. ...Read more
My 8 yr old has a bad rash after getting a flu shot yesterday. He has no difficulty breathing. Do I need to take him immediately to the dr?
I got the flu shot yesterday and noticed today I have a small rash on the side of my face and jaw. Is this a reaction to the flu shot.
Probably not.: This does not sound like a reaction to the flu vaccine. However, I cannot tell what the rash is from without seeing it. You should have it seen by your doctor, or if you are signed up with the HealthTap Prime subscription, request a consult by a HealthTap doctor. ...Read more
I got a flu shot yesterday and just now feel 2 non tender supraclavicular nodes on left (flu shot was given in left arm). Should I be concerned?
Monitor: No, likely not. I would just monitor them and if still there in one month, see MD. ...Read more
Not for most: When you have what you describe it is usually because you have a sensitivity to something in the vaccine. I would check if the form of the vaccine you took had Latex and or preservative in it. Allergy to eggs could cause this. If just mild inflammation and sore muscle is not unusual. If not allergic to Aleve (naproxen) or the like take this plus cold compresses at the site. Infection is unlikely but possible ...Read more
I have a tender bump at the back of my head at the base of my skull... a lymph node?? I got the flu shot yesterday....related? Or from scalp scabs?
I'm getting a stabbing pain in my wrist, the pain also extends into my arm, palm and fingers. Motion = bad. Got a flu shot yesterday. What is it?
Flu shot Friday, yesterday very achy, no appetite, sore throat, feeling the same way today. Can this be from the shot? If so how long can it last?
Unlikely: Influenza vaccine causes only two types of side effects: pain or discomfort at the injection site, usually mild and generally gone within 2-3 days; and rare allergic reactions. It rarely or never causes flu-like symptoms like yours. Probably you were just unlucky, catching a garden variety viral illness (or conceivably influenza itself) in the past few days. Contact your doctor if it continues. ...Read more
Are redness and swelling and pain normal for the area of a flu shot? I got mine yesterday and I can hardly move my arm.
BUT to the degree of "can hardly move my arm" is not usual for flu shot
without an exam, I can only give general information, and local soreness is the number one side effect of the shots. Generally lasts under a day. Heating pad resolves
local infection can also occur and is serious. Gets worse over time. Heating pad doesn't help. ...Read more
I got a flu and pneumonia shot yesterday and today I am running a fever of almost 102. Should I be worried?
Vaccine side effects: Probably you are having mild side-effects from one or the other of those vaccines. I think it's best to call your doctor about it, so they can 'track' your condition. Most likely this fever (which can occur in a few percent of patients) will go away on its own. You want to watch out for any localizing symptoms (red, sore, swollen arm) and other 'systemic' effects like continued fever, weakness etc ...Read more

Can a flu shot to create a bulge and very sore lympnode? I had my shot yesterday and woke with this pain and lump. Doc said b\c my shot no bloodwork
Yes.: Sounds like a local reaction to the flu vaccine. This is possible. Should not progress to become too terribly big. Should resolve over next few days. On the good side your body is producing a vigorous response to the flu antigens which is a good thing. ...Read more

Stomach cramping/pain, diarrhea, nausea since yesterday morning. Today I also started getting body aches. I have flu shot. Is there anything I can do?
It sounds like you've picked up a stomach virus a.K.A. Viral gastroenteritis and it's completely unrelated to the flu shot.
You can take an otc diarrhea medicine like loperamide or pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) to help and make sure to drink plenty of fluids, gatorade, and eat very lightly - bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast - nothing heavy or spicy to let your stomach rest. ...Read more
