My GERD was under control with Prilosec. Three days after the stomach flu hit it's awful again. Is there a connection?

My GERD was under control with Prilosec. Three days after the stomach flu hit it's awful again. Is there a connection?

Give it some time.: A "stomach flu" can be accompanied by nausea, vomiting and "heartburn" that can mimic your usual GERD, and it can be so relentless that your Prilosec is simply not helping right now. It's doubtful that this stomach flu in the short term would have worsened your GERD for the long term. Give it a few more days and hopefully you'll start feeling better in this regard. ...Read more

Upper rgt chest swellng & dull ache-sinusitis-reoccurring heartburn-was just sick w lupus fl, bronchitis & flu-xray/us & mammo clear-wbc18 ER senthome?

Your WBC is high: A WBC of 18 is high. This could mean bacterial or viral infection or inflammation, or maybe you are taking Prednisone for your lupus. Prednisone or other steroids cause a high wbc. It sounds like you should check in with your rheumatologist as soon as possible. The swelling you describe needs to be examined by a doctor who knows you and your chronic health history. I hope you feel better soon! ...Read more

Can a person get heartburn after a episode os stomach flu? Did not having any vomiting during flu so no esphogus irritation. Tum & vinigar no help

Yes, it's possible: This can happen if you have had a cold, and your nutritional status is reduced, and if you had any alcohol, or other irritants to your stomach. Also if you're not hydrating well, or eating spicy foods, or anything else challenging your digestion, you can easily have heartburn occurring. Digestion is temporarily affected by the stomach flu, so make sure that you are taking probiotics to rebuild your system. ...Read more

Hello,: Hello, I am answering this 6 days after you wrote it. I don't know the cause of your symptoms. Unless you are taking something that blackens the stool like pepto bismol, (bismuth subsalicylate) that is of concern. Heartburn after having stomach flu, no vomiting only diarrhea, fever and aches. Tums (calcium carbonate) and organic vinager don't help. What would help the heartburn?

Try an H2 blocker: Some people develop heartburn after a stomach flu even without vomiting, because the stomach flu may have caused gastroesophageal reflux, and irritation to the esophagus. I suggest try famotidine 20mg twice a day or ranitidine 150mg twice a day, both are over the counter. In addition, avoid alcohol, caffeine, cigarettes, large meals, and fatty meals. Also, Gaviscon tabs are a wonderful antacid. ...Read more
