For an aldosterone deficiency doctors will prescribe fludrocortisone acetate; is it the same as aldosterone?

Stopped florinef (fludrocortisone) 0.5 mg prescribed 4 low BP & dizzy spells d/t edema, abd pain, and gain of 7 lbs after two doses. Helped BP & dizziness though. Now urinating clear urine like crazy q 1/2 hr. Normal?

Normal: You were under a fluid retaining effect of Florinef (fludrocortisone) based on your report of weight gain of 7 pounds and swelling. When you stopped it, the fluid started to get mobilized i.e. Started to leave your body. You need to work with your doctor on replacement of Florinef (fludrocortisone) or using a lower dose. Your 0.5 mg dose is unclear to me. The tab is 0.1 mg. This means you are taking 5 pills/day or you mean 0.05mg? ...Read more

Would you use florinef (fludrocortisone) for a balance disorder?

Depends: If the balance issue is due to low blood pressure and no other causes were found about why the blood pressure is low, then you could try it to see if it improves. I would search for the cause of the "unbalance" first before trying fludrocortisone. ...Read more

How does 0.1 mg florinef (fludrocortisone) work differently or similarly to 1 tsp salt in gatorade? And wil florinef (fludrocortisone) retain as much sodium as the sodium in gatorade?

Complicated: That is a complicated answer. Florinef (fludrocortisone) is a mineralocorticoid ( a steroid) that prevents loss of sodium into the urine. So if you are prescribed Florinef (fludrocortisone) you likely have a salt losing kidney issue. So if you in fact do have that problem the salt that you take in will be excreted into the urine and will not help expand your blood volume. ...Read more

That is intended to help regulate your blood pressure, especially when upright. ...Read more

A side effect on florinef (fludrocortisone) leaflet says shortness of breath. How come it can cause this?

Drug companies are mandated to report any side effect even if they are rare. Florinef (fludrocortisone) is known to cause fluid retention. Excessive fluid in the blood means heart will have to work hard, causing shortness of breath. ...Read more

Had mild rash in past from penicillin after few days. Terrified of drug anaphylaxis from florinef (fludrocortisone) for my bp. Never had anaphylaxis. So hard!

No relationship.: The rash from penicillin lis likely mediated by another immune mechanism than ige-mediated anaphylaxis and thus even then the risk for anaphylaxis is small. Florinef (fludrocortisone) is totally different from penicillin so don't lose sleep over it. I presume you are taking Florinef (fludrocortisone) for low blood pressure. ...Read more
