Probiotics, by definition, are beneficial bacteria that live in our intestinal tract to help us maintain health intestines and colon. There are several species of these bacteria that are helpful to us including lactobacillus acidophilus. The meats we eat contain antibiotics that kill our natural bacteria that reside in our gut. Today, you will replace these ...Read more
Many benefits: Probiotics are most commonly used in association with antibiotics to prevent diarrhea & yeast infections (florastor is esp. Good for this) but acidophilus & other probiotics have many other proven benefits, including enhancing immunity, improving digestion, regulating bowels, preventing cancer, lowering cholesterol & reducing inflammation and allergies. Does Florastor help with vaginal health? I've tried other probiotics and they don't agree with me. I can tolerate Florastor though. Thanks!

Does florastor cause uti's or help treat them... I have read articles about both situations and was quite confused.?
I have recurrent BV (for years). What type of probiotics would you recommend? I need something strong. What about florastor or vsl #3 & how many?
Hi, I've bought pepto-bismol maximum strength and Florastor probiotics. How am I supposed to take them, at the same time, separately, with or without fo?
Adjunctive probiotic: There are some docs who really advocate probiotics in the setting of C. diff. I'm not so sure however, and some studies actually show harm. The vanco should do the job -but if not, there are more advanced therapies. Hope you can get an ID doc on the case. Fidaxomicin may be superior to vanco. Then, there's fecal transplant which works really well but not always available. I check my pt's for IgG ...Read more
What kind or brand of probiotic can I take to help me prevent uti? I heard of florastor but I'm not sure if they all have the same thing. Thanks
Pro- & anti-biotics: Women w/recurrent uti's have been found to have altered flora w/ reduced lactobacillus sp and prolonged colonizn with uropathogens like e. Coli. Oral or intravaginal l. Rhamnosus gr-1; l. Reuteri (fermentum) rc-14, & l. Crispatus prevent adherance of pathogenic bacteria and reduce the incidence (not 100%) of recurrent uti's. If you plan to use probiotics, read the labels and look for these. ...Read more

My doctor prescribed Florastor, will this help? I am also lactose intolerant, will this make things worse?
Incomplete Question: If you are having loose stools following recent use of an antibiotic, then recolonizing your bowels with helpful bacteria will help. All antibiotics can disturb the normal environment of the gut and lead to gas, bloating, and loose stools. A more harmful condition called C. dif colitis can occur that can need more than Florastor. But FLorastor will not hurt you ...Read more

No: Just as there are many types of bacteria there are many types of yeast. Vaginal yeast infections are caused by candida (usually albicans but there are other varieties). Florastor is a "friendly" yeast that is similar to baker's yeast. It does not cause infections, in fact taking it with antibiotics reduces liklihood of vaginal yeast ; diarrhea. It's safe though some are allergic to it. ...Read more

Is a person less likely to get c-diff when taking a low dose daily prophlactic antibitoic(augmentin) as well as taking probitoics and florastor?
NO!!!!!!!: Your rate of cdiff will likely go up if taking daily antibiotics. This is a terrible idea. The probiotic like florastor is a great one. Just eating yogurt with high lactobacillus counts like stonyfield is even better. We still don't know exactly why cdiff occurs... Antibiotics killing too many good bacteria,? Up-regulating genes, down-regulating non cdiff genes in cdiff other bacteria. ...Read more

Is it safe to take Florastor (Sacc boulaardi) after wisdom tooth extraction, or will the yeast get into my bloodstream through the open wound?
Capsule? Pill?: If Florastor is a capsule, like I suspect, then you shouldn't have any problems as long as you swallow the capsules whole (as they are meant to be). By swallowing the capsule intact, the yeast won't be released until the capsule coating gets dissolved, which occurs in the intestines (the stomach acid starts the process but the yeast is released in the small intestine). I think you'll be safe. GL! ...Read more

Since taking florastor, have had terrible sore throat, flu like symp's. Could be coincidence, but could florastor cause these syms or prevent healing?
Coincidence.: Florastor is a probiotic, which usually does not have flulike symptoms as a potential side effect. Therefore, it is most likely a coincidence. At this point I would stop the Florastor temporarily, and not restart it until after your flulike symptoms have resolved. If those symptoms return after you restart it, then you may not be able to tolerate that medicine. Good luck. ...Read more

This yeast is the only probiotic with strong evidence it can
prevent C.diff colitis. It also is effective, along with the bacteria Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, in preventing non-C.diff antibiotic related diarrhea. If a person is in remission from C.diff colitis it is recommended, especially if you have to take an antibiotic again. ...Read more
