Adjunctive probiotic: There are some docs who really advocate probiotics in the setting of C. diff. I'm not so sure however, and some studies actually show harm. The vanco should do the job -but if not, there are more advanced therapies. Hope you can get an ID doc on the case. Fidaxomicin may be superior to vanco. Pro- & anti-biotics: Women w/recurrent uti's have been found to have altered flora w/ reduced lactobacillus sp and prolonged colonizn with uropathogens like e.Coli. Oral or intravaginal l. Rhamnosus gr-1; l. Reuteri (fermentum) rc-14, & l. Crispatus prevent adherance of pathogenic bacteria and reduce the incidence (not 100%) of recurrent uti's. No: Just as there are many types of bacteria there are many types of yeast. Vaginal yeast infections are caused by candida (usually albicans but there are other varieties). Florastor is a "friendly" yeast that is similar to baker's yeast. It does not cause infections, in fact taking it with antibiotics reduces liklihood of vaginal yeast ; diarrhea.
