Doctor insights on:
Florastor C Diff
Adjunctive probiotic: There are some docs who really advocate probiotics in the setting of C. diff. I'm not so sure however, and some studies actually show harm. The vanco should do the job -but if not, there are more advanced therapies. Hope you can get an ID doc on the case. Fidaxomicin may be superior to vanco. Then, there's fecal transplant which works really well but not always available. I check my pt's for IgG ...Read more
Probiotics, by definition, are beneficial bacteria that live in our intestinal tract to help us maintain health intestines and colon. There are several species of these bacteria that are helpful to us including lactobacillus acidophilus. The meats we eat contain antibiotics that kill our natural bacteria that reside in our gut. Today, you will replace these ...Read more

Is a person less likely to get c-diff when taking a low dose daily prophlactic antibitoic (augmentin) as well as taking probitoics and florastor?
NO!!!!!!!: Your rate of cdiff will likely go up if taking daily antibiotics. This is a terrible idea. The probiotic like florastor is a great one. Just eating yogurt with high lactobacillus counts like stonyfield is even better. We still don't know exactly why cdiff occurs...Antibiotics killing too many good bacteria, ? Up-regulating genes, down-regulating non cdiff genes in cdiff other bacteria. ...Read more

Is florastor probiotic good for maintenance of IBS related symptoms? Also, by it being a yeast, is it safe for someone who has been in remission from C.diff colitis? Lastly, when taking florastor, is it normal to have stomach rumbling and extra gas if you
Florastor contains the yeast Saccharomyces boulardii. Y.
This yeast is the only probiotic with strong evidence it can
prevent C.diff colitis. It also is effective, along with the bacteria Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, in preventing non-C.diff antibiotic related diarrhea. If a person is in remission from C.diff colitis it is recommended, especially if you have to take an antibiotic again. ...Read more

Are probiotic pills safe? I see warming labels on some saying may cause. Wats the best probiotic I can use. C diff positive with no diaherra.

Was successfully treated for c diff in Aug. Doc said to take probiotics for the rest of my life. Can I stop if I replace pills with other probiotic?
Yes, however...: I question the need to take probiotics the rest of your life. Once you have re-established healthy flora it should be maintained by a healthy diet (which can include yogurt/sauerkraut & other foods with friendly flora). But I'd be very cautious to take antibiotics only when absolutely essential & be careful in the choice of antibiotics. Take large doses of probiotics during & after antibiotic Rx. ...Read more
Wife seems to have had bad reaction to clindamycin a year ago. C-diff negative, but now IBS symptoms. What's the best probiotic to help resolve?
Your choice: People with irritable bowel syndrome (ibs) may benefit from the addition of a probiotic. Ibs is a general term which covers a variety of non specific GI complaints which have no absolute pathological cause. I suggest a well balanced diet which includes fruits, vegetables, and other fibre. I also suggest addition of yogurt to the diet. A probiotic is equal to about 10 yogurts a day. Any brand is ok. ...Read more
Do probiotic pills help with c diff. I hear meds are a quests sometimes. On vancomycin liquid 125. I hear feces transplants have good success rate.
Probiotics: Probably help more with prevention than treatment and may be reasonable in patients with recurrent disease. Saccharomyces boulardii and lactobacillus rhamnosus have been studied the most. There is good evidence for fecal transplant] to treat c. Difficile but still considered investigational and not without potential risks. ...Read more

Does florastor cause uti's or help treat them...I have read articles about both situations and was quite confused.?
I have recurrent BV (for years). What type of probiotics would you recommend? I need something strong. What about florastor or vsl #3 & how many?
Hi, I've bought pepto-bismol maximum strength and Florastor probiotics. How am I supposed to take them, at the same time, separately, with or without fo?
What kind or brand of probiotic can I take to help me prevent uti? I heard of florastor but I'm not sure if they all have the same thing. Thanks
Pro- & anti-biotics: Women w/recurrent uti's have been found to have altered flora w/ reduced lactobacillus sp and prolonged colonizn with uropathogens like e.Coli. Oral or intravaginal l. Rhamnosus gr-1; l. Reuteri (fermentum) rc-14, & l. Crispatus prevent adherance of pathogenic bacteria and reduce the incidence (not 100%) of recurrent uti's. If you plan to use probiotics, read the labels and look for these. ...Read more

Incomplete Question: If you are having loose stools following recent use of an antibiotic, then recolonizing your bowels with helpful bacteria will help.
