History and exam: Everyone generally has at least one floating ribs some have a couple on each side though usually the lower ribs. They can get irritated on your hip or on the ledge of a couch when you're leaning or a variety of other things. They are slow to heal. Sometimes you can feel them slip underneath another rib. That is uncomfortable. There's a lot of carlatun these ribs which is slow to heal. Even chest x-rays are not very helpful. Sometimes diagnostic nerve block can define things. ...Read more

Yes, at the back, --: If its swollen for any reason. Generally ribs do not swell, unless growing a cyst or a tumor in it.
These are extremely uncommon, to say the least. A healing fracture off a bone could be felt as a swelling.

What floating rib: We do not have a floating rib unless you broke one and become floated or I am misunderstanding what you mean by floating
if you mean your lower rib it is common problem in women because of the kind of bra they ware trhat put pressure on the ribs and cause inflammation
it could be what we call costochondritis

If symptoms are get-: Ting better, then just continue with the pain meds, and start gradual twisting exercises of the body, slowly, within limits of discomfort and progress daily.
If symptoms increase then see your doc.
These ribs are surrounded by muscles, so sprained muscles are a common result of an injury. Warm/hot packs would greatly help.

Posterior rib fractures even with flail portion can be pretty stable and protected.
Anterior 2-4 rib segments are quit mobile and additional trauma could puncture lung or underlying tissue.

DO or DC: It is not unusual to get a rib out of place. Try gently stretching, twisting, bending. Sometimes it will go back on its own. Also consider seeing a chiropractor or osteopathic physician that can manipulate it back into position.

CT scans are better: To define the boney problems than the mri's.
