History and exam: Everyone generally has at least one floating ribs some have a couple on each side though usually the lower ribs. They can get irritated on your hip or on the ledge of a couch when you're leaning or a variety of other things. They are slow to heal. Sometimes you can feel them slip underneath another rib. Yes, at the back, --: If its swollen for any reason. Generally ribs do not swell, unless growing a cyst or a tumor in it. These are extremely uncommon, to say the least. A healing fracture off a bone could be felt as a swelling. These are located at the back , on either side of the spine and covered by plenty of muscles. True ribs have direct connections through a cartilage connection to the sternum and false ribs 9 and 10 have indirect connection through cartilage to the xiphoid process (distal extension of the sternum).
