Went to ER for back spasms, they gave me 2 shots. 1 was flexeril (cyclobenzaprine hcl) and I don't remember what the other was. What is a common narcotic used with flexeril (cyclobenzaprine hcl)?

Back pain shot: In the usa the most common opioid shot is Dilaudid (hydromorphone). Another one commonly used is Demerol (meperidine hydrochloride) (meperidine) - this assumes you had an opioid. If it was not an opioid then you probably got toradol (ketorolac) which is an nsaid. Read more

It can: If there is muscular component of pain it may. Also, it can be sedating so may get a good night's sleep if you take it prior to going to bed. It may work better if combined with otc medication like ibuprophen if you can tolerate along with heat applications & exercises includibg stretching, core stabilization & cardiovascular routines. Use proper body mechanics & stay fit, trim & don't smoke. Read more

I use Flexeril (cyclobenzaprine hcl) for muscle spasm PRN but off label works wonders for insomnia. 8 hrs of sleep instead of 4. Is there a tricyclic antidepressant similar?

No: Flexeril (cyclobenzaprine hcl) is not TCA and belongs to a different class. .. It has been used for insomnia and I do use it for my patients for that reason here and there. .. It's considered a relatively safer medication than TCA class. Read more

No, but...: It will ground you if you have airborne or diving status, and your profile will/should indicate you are on muscle relaxants which may impact safety and keep you from doing your MOS. You may be stuck in the motor pool for a while until you are considered safe by your treating military doctor. Being on a limiting T3 (liothyronine) profile long enough - regardless of reason - will send you straight to the MEB. Read more

Possibly: Depending on dose, this combination could result in increased bleeding tendency, and serotonin syndrome, which is characterized by high fever, muscle aches, etc. Be sure your doctor knows what and how much you are taking. Read more

Any experience w/flexeril causing afib? If so, is there another similar medication w/out that side effect?

Zanaflex (tizanidine): There are precautions listed in taking Flexeril if you have heart rhythm disorder and afib. I usually prescribe Zanaflex (tizanidine). However, visit with your doctor to make sure he/she is comfortable you taking this medication. Read more
