Colostomy nurse: This important question can be best answered by your colostomy nurse or gastroenterologist. I assume that it will require one fleets enema through the colostomy and another through the rectum if both areas are to be visualized during the procedure, but it's best to consult the abovementioned specialists about this matter. What is the difference between an air contrast barium enema and a colonoscopy?

What is the difference between an air contrast barium enema and a colonoscopy?

Imaging vs looking: A Barium Enema is performed by a radiologist by flowing contrast solution into the colon and then taking x-rays of the abdomen after the lining of the intestine has been coated.
Sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy is performed by a gastroenterologist who uses a flexible scope and camera to look directly into the colon at the intestinal lining. Read more

What is difference between colonoscopy and barium enema in terms of information?

Significant: Colonoscopy is a direct look at the lining of the colon vs an indirect x-ray shadow of a barium enema (be). If something is seen on a colonoscopy, it can be treated or biopsied. The be can miss things in the rectum and should include a flex sig to evaluate that area. You are sedated for a colonoscopy. No sedation for a be. Both are acceptable measures for colon cancer screening. Read more

What is the difference between a barium enema and a virtual colonoscopy?

What is the difference between a barium enema and a virtual colonoscopy?

CT colonoscopy: Is a CT scan with specific technical parameters. There is a bowel prep to clear out the colon, and a tube is placed into the rectum to fill the colon with air. A barium enema uses x-ray/fluoroscopy instead of CT. With a rectal tube, the colon is filled with barium and air, and the patient placed in different positions for viewing. Barium enema has been largely replaced by colonoscopy. Read more

Is there a homemade solution to use by enema method to soothe my colon pain? Colonoscopy messed me up badly.

Is there a homemade solution to use by enema method to soothe my colon pain? Colonoscopy messed me up badly.

Wouldn't go there!: Humans are not designed to have people create homemade solutions to send up the butt. A G.I. Specialist can help, along with a primary care doctor. There may be approved enemas out there, but their effects and their side effects on a particular patient (and his or her underlying medical issues) should be carefully considered before venturing into enema territory. I have a colonoscopy tomorrow I am required to do an enema. I can't get myself to do it?

Its necessary: The enema or liquid solution GoLytely (polyethylene glycol) is necessary for proper colon prep. Whithout this it would be difficult for the endoscopist to look into your colon. Check with the procedure center if have not been able to do so, as they may re-schedule. Read more

Could I have colon hydrotherapy as a substitute for the "standard" prep for a colonoscopy? Normally use enemas.

Could I have colon hydrotherapy as a substitute for the "standard" prep for a colonoscopy? Normally use enemas.

If it clears you out: The main purpose of colon prep for colonsocopy is to clean out the stool so that the camera can see the linings of your colon. The 'standard prep" works well because it has been done a gazillion times. I am not sure how good the hydrotherapy will do, but as long as it clean you out (without causing problem for you), I don't see why not! If it does not, u may have to do the standard" good luck. Rectum burns after I gave myself an enema- I still feel full. Just had colonoscopy it was clean, am I really constipated?

Rectum burns after I gave myself an enema- I still feel full. Just had colonoscopy it was clean, am I really constipated?

See your GI: If colonoscopy was "clean" means both your colon was cleaned out of stool and clear to visualize well surface and it was clear of any abnormalities then you have rectal burning after giving yourself an enema then wonder if you injured yourself inappropriately administering the enema to yourself. Rectal burning can also occur from drinking dr pepper. Check back with GI who did your colonoscopy. Read more

I have to have a colonoscopy and my doctor said to do a salt enema, what is it exactly and do I buy it from the pharmacist?

Ask your doctor: Any gastroenterologist who is going to do colonoscopy will provide your instructions for colon clean up which includes laxatives and enemas. So ask him/her or his office staff. They will either give you a bag of medicines or write you a prescription indicating the names of the laxatives/enema salt, included. Read more

What is the difference between a barium enema and a CT colonoscopy?

What is the difference between a barium enema and a CT colonoscopy?

A barium enema has: Slightly more radiation exposure, requires you to flip and turn on the table until the radiologist is satisfied with the images, and in the end reveals slightly less information than the CT. The CT requires slightly less radiation exposure, allows you to lie flat on your back, and gives the radiologist more internal information. But a traditional colonoscopy is the first choice.
