Steroid side effects: As with all steroid eye drops there can be side effects. The most common are formation of cataracts and an increase in intraocular pressure leading to glaucoma. Also there is an increase in possible infections in the eye. These side effects are dependent upon the concentration and duration of the steroid. See below: Patanol, (olopatadine) made by Alcon, is an eye drop with anti-histamine & anti-cholinergic activity :good for allergies. Flarex is a steroid eye drop. I'm not an eye doctor, but my belief is that, while both are effective for perennial allergies, the former is safe while the latter is not. You can develop an eye infection which can be devastating and mask the signs with Flarex. How about cetirizine pills? ...Read more

Not necessarily: Steroid eye drops, no matter what the potency, are NEVER mild medications! I ALWAYS recommend a carefully thought out management protocol for patients prescribed steroid eye drops.
