Just had a minor bout of diverticulitis... how long to take cipro (ciprofloxacin) and flagyl...7 or 10 or 14 days. Feeling much better after just 24 hours with meds.
I was diagnosed with diverticulitis and was started on Flagyl and cipro (ciprofloxacin). How long before feeling better?
48 hours: You really should start feeling better within 48 hours, if not earlier. If your symptoms are not improving or worsening, you should consider talking to the doctor that prescribed the antibiotics. ...Read more
Dr "presumably" diagnosed me with diverticulitis. I'm taking cipro (ciprofloxacin) and flagyl. My bowels changed in color now dark and pasty is this normal?
Black and pasty could mean that you have and upper gastrointestinal bleed... although unlikely...
Call your prescribing doctor, and do not panic. ...Read more
I have been told that I have diverticulitis and colitis. I am on oral cipro (ciprofloxacin) and Flagyl for both. How long for the meds to kick in and the diarrheatostop?
Confirm the dx: You first have to make sure that the diagnosis is correct. Diverticular associated colitis is a real entity, but it is less common than ulcerative colitis or crohn's disease. If a gastroenterologist confirmed that diagnosis with colonoscopy and biopsy, then sometimes antibiotics, such as Cipro (ciprofloxacin) and Flagyl may not work to stop the diarrhea. Other treatment options are possible. ...Read more
I have been diagnosed with Diverticulitis. How do I stop the diarrhea? Currently taking Cipro (ciprofloxacin) and Flagyl.
Be careful!!!: Diarrhea usually IS NOT part of the symptom complex of diverticulitis. How was your case diagnosed? Did you have a CT scan. And even if you did colitis, which is just a general term for inflamed colon, can look like diverticulitis but it would more commonly cause diarrhea. If diarrhea started after taking antibiotics you could have C diff colitis which requires stool culture and can be serious ...Read more

Can I take cipro and flagyl (I have diverticulitis) with my Ativan for my anxiety? Is there any interactions?
I was diagnosed with diverticulitis and was started on Flagyl and cipro (ciprofloxacin)? Is that the usual therapy?
Yes, quite common: It sounds like you have uncomplicated diverticulitis, which is most often treated as outpatient with oral antibiotics, often Cipro (ciprofloxacin) and flagyl. Most people get better; most (about 65%) won't have any more episodes. For those who do have another episode, 99% are less serious than the first one. After the acute episode is over, make sure to drink enough water (64 oz/day) and add a fiber supplement. ...Read more

I am on flagyl and cipro (ciprofloxacin) 500 mg each for diverticulitis I am having excruciating pain in my lower back would either of these meds cause this?
Taking Flagyl and cipro (ciprofloxacin) for diverticulitis. Should I take probiotics at same time? Can I eat nuts and seeds now or after symptoms (pain) goes away?
Probiotics are safe.: Probiotics will not affect your antibiotic treatment for diverticulitis and are safe to take. I would avoid eating anything with seeds or nuts as these may get stuck in a diverticulum and cause a flare of diverticulitis. Risk of recurrence is drastically reduced by removing the diseased part of the colon. ...Read more

Diagnosed with diverticulitis was given cipro (ciprofloxacin) & flagyl Day 4 and my lymph nodes in my neck are huge. Should I discontinue use my neck hurts?
See your doctor: Lymph node enlargement in the neck can't be from diverticulitis, and it would be very unlikely as a side effect of cipro (ciprofloxacin) or flagyl. I would guess something else is going on, which might be causing both the lymph node inflammation and intestinal or abdominal symptoms similar to diverticulitis. Return to your doctor ASAP and follow her advice about whether to continue the antibiotics. Good luck! ...Read more
I have been taking cipro (ciprofloxacin) and Flagyl for about 48 hours for diverticulitis I am now having shoulder pain I researched and it appears I should stop the cipro (ciprofloxacin) r t tendonitis et al can I continue with just the flagyl?
No: Shoulder discomfort is likely not related to the antibiotics. Keep taking the antibiotics as prescribed & contact your prescribing doctor for an examination. Do not stop medications without discussing with your doctor. ...Read more

I was put on cipro (ciprofloxacin) for diverticulitis but reacted to it - tendons of knees and feet severely swollen. Will taking only Flagyl be enough?

Been taking Flagyl and keflex for diverticulitis have developed a yeast infection, can I take fluconazole along with my antibiotics to treat it?
Yes: Fluconazole can be taken along with Keflex and flagyl. Stop the Macrobid you list as taking. This drug has many toxicities and is only a urinary antiseptic which does not achieve therapeutic tissue levels. It is only used to treat or prevent bladder infections. You certainly don't need to take it while you are on the other antibiotics. ...Read more
On Flagyl and Levaquin (levofloxacin) for 5 days so far for diverticulitis. Is it still common to have abdominal pain? Eating low fiber, low fat foods.
If you are better..: Antibiotics usually take a couple of days to work and even when they are working well after a significant episode of infection and inflammation you may stay sore for a few days as long as compared with when you started treatment you are doing better. If not better or worse then you need to be seen again to reconsider treatment options. ...Read more
Taking bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) and flagyl for diverticulitis. Horrible nasuea, headache and chest discomfort, body aches and just feel sick. Should I stop the med?
No: While nausea is a common adverse effect of almost any medication, the other symptoms you describe are not likely to be caused by these antibiotics. They could be caused by worsening infection, but an exam is necessary to make that determination. Seeing a doctor (preferably the prescribing doc) without delay is important in this situation. ...Read more
After 10 days on cipro/flagyl for diverticulitis I now have an 1.5cm swollen occipital lymphnode. A CT and abdominal X-ray was negative. Thoughts?
Could be anything: Swollen lymph nodes can be caused by anything (even dandruff!). The good news is that your ct was negative and that the occipital lymph nodes aren't generally related to the colon, where your diverticulitis was. You should be following up with your doctor about your diverticulitis anyway, so make sure they know to keep an eye on the lymph node. Chances are, it will go away with time! ...Read more
I was giving cipro/flagyl for what looks like diverticulitis on a ct scan. I'm concerned cause I have tendinitis and peripheral neuropathy already.
Benefits > Risks: In this situation Cipro Flagyl is a standard regimen however Bactrim can be substituted for Cipro if you are concerned. It's probably too late because the outpatient regimen should show improvement within 3 days. Clear liquid diet. Be confident this regimen is keeping you safe and if any worsening of symptoms occurs seek ER/Surgical consultation please. Good luck. ...Read more
I was diagnosed by a physical exam that I had a mild case of diverticulitis. I had a low grade fever, cramping, bloating, constipation/diarrhea tenderness to the touch in the lower left colon a week ago. I was put on cipro & Flagyl for 7-10 days and a 2
Diverticulosis is very common - small outpouching of the lining of the large intestine (more often found on the left side of the colon), which are generally asymptomatic unless they become infected. It is found in more than half of americans over age 60. People who eat mostly processed food, as many americans eat, do not get enough fiber in their diet. As a result, constipation and hard stools are more likely to occur - causing people to strain when passing stools. This increases the pressure in the colon or intestines and may cause these pouches to form.
Diverticulitis can present with localized pain, fever, diarrhea, but on occasion, if ruptures (like an appendix), can cause peritonitis and abscess formation. In mild cases, antibiotics can soothe the infection. Once better, you should add more fiber to your diet and avoid certain foods, such as nuts and seeds. Eating more fiber can help prevent future attacks. However, if you develop more severe symptoms, or if you have repeated bouts of diverticulitis, you may need to have that segment of large intestine removed. In emergent situations, with abscess and advanced signs of infection, emergency surgery may necessitate the use of a temporary colostomy.
I suggest that you see a gastroenterologist, who may do a colonoscopy or barium enema. You may then be referred to a general or colorectal surgeon if surgery is needed. ...Read more
