Difficult infection: C difficile can be a major and an aggravating infection! There can be resistant infections that can take weeks to finally resolve. Bowel infections may take longer to treat in the sense that they are no longer infected, but not yet symptom-free. Continue with plenty of hydration and fiber in the diet. Follow up with your Family Doc if you finish the Flagyl, but still feel sick! ...Read more

How many days for symptoms to improve Vancomycin for c.diff? Flagyl did not cure. How long wait before try another ABX? When should let Dr know?

C diff: This has become VERY hard to treat. If no better in 7-10 days then may need to try different treatment. I know it sounds gross but fecal transplants (instilling infusion of stool free of c diff into your colon) have been helpful in tough cases. Hope this helps. Best of luck Dr R ...Read more

I have c-diff and took a course od flagyl, as well as, oral vancomycin 500 mg q6 hrs. X 14 days & am still c-diff positive. What's the next step?

With symptoms.?: Note: treatment success is measured by clinical resolution of the diarrhea. Did the diarrhea go away? If so, no further treatment is necessary. Otherwise, several alternatives includes: 1. Vanco taper, 2. Vanco with Rifaximin chaser, 3. Fidaxomicin, 4. Fecal transplant, 5. Colectomy. The 5th choice is too aggressive in my opinion. I favor #4 though there is an "ick" factor involved. Good luck! ...Read more

How effective is Vancomycin for treating c.diff? Husband has UC. Flagyl didn't do it. I am worried.

How effective is Vancomycin for treating c.diff? Husband has UC. Flagyl didn't do it. I am worried.

Very: Vancomycin is the drug of choice for treating C. Diff if Flagyl fails. In fact, it is the only use for the oral form of Vancomycin (it isn't absorbed in the intestine, and so has to be given IV for other conditions).

Hope this helps, Carl! ...Read more

My husband tested positive for c.diff and hasn't taken antibiotics in decades. Is this unusual? Prescribed flagyl. How likely that I will get it?

My husband tested positive for c.diff and hasn't taken antibiotics in decades. Is this unusual? Prescribed flagyl. How likely that I will get it?

Not contagious dz: Clostridium difficile is not a transmitted disease from person to person. It most commonly affects older adults in hospitals or in long-term care facilities and typically occurs after use of antibiotic medications. Treatment in those without symptoms is controversial. In general, mild cases do not require specific treatment. If your husband has symptoms he should be seen by his physician. ...Read more

I started Flagyl 3 days ago for c-diff, im I still contagious. Can c-diff be hard stool with thick/sticky like mucus?

Diarrhea-contagious: Since only 80% of c diff responds to Flagyl you should consider yourself contagious at least until the diarrhea resolves. There is also a relatively high recurrence rate so the real answer is you are potentially contagious until the diarrhea resolves and stays gone for a couple of weeks... ...Read more

I've had c diff finished Flagyl 2wks ago. Had acute sinutis & took zpak at same time of flagyl. I have milky white discharge no odor & back pain?

Vaginal discharge?: Rough few weeks. If that's white vaginal discharge, likely is a candidal (yeast) infection, from the antibiotics; usually thick, cottage cheesy, itchy maybe. Generally treated with antifungals, topically or orally.

Test is positive c.diff 3 wks after 10 days flagyl. Antibiotics again? Retest? Have UC, not having flare. CBC results and SED rate normal. Colonized?

Abx again: If you are having diarrhea, you definitely need to be treated again. It is very common for patients to have recurrent C diff with UC. Usually I will do a prolonged course of Flagyl and then consider oral vancomycin. If this doesn't work, I sometimes do a prolonged course of antibiotics. You should also be on probiotics. Last resort is a fecal transplant at a major medical center. Good luck ...Read more

Day4 on Flagyl for C.diff but now have constipation (1 bm in 4days), not diarrhea. Feel ok, just nauseated. Is constipation normal? Laxative trial ok?

See / talk 2 doctor.: You should direct your question to whoever prescribed the Flagyl to treat the C. Diff-associated diarrhea (CDAD) or use HealthTap Prime to establish care w/ a primary physician & go over your history. C Diff infections aren't to be taken likely as up to 60% of cases can recur. During treatment some constipation can occur, but 4 days sounds excessive. It also depends on your diet & other meds. GL! ...Read more

Will flagyl, which I use currently to treat c diff, also treat h pylori and help heal my ulcer? Would taking aciphex (rabeprazole) also help?

Treatment for: H. Pylori is usually 3 drugs (2 antibiotics and PPI) for 2 weeks for highest response rate. Antibiotics are usually amoxicillin and Biaxin (clarithromycin). Alternative antibiotic is Flagyl used alone, but this has lower response rate. Only way to know for sure whether Flagyl alone was enough to successfully eradicate H. pylori is to test before and after your treatment. ...Read more
