Cardio type exercise: Many people have muscular calves and that is their hereditary anatomy. To get "leaner" muscles one should do low weight higher repetition type exercises. Cramps?: It could be a circulation issue or an electrolyte issue, or a combination. See a doctor for a simple blood test and examination. You don't mention if it is in both legs, but used the plural "calves" so i'm guessing it is both legs. Are the pains after some activity, or a certain time of day? My calves are having random hotspots, that come and go. They don't hurt, but are just are hot. What can this be?
Interesting: Hot areas that come & go without pain makes one think of hives, which can have multiple causes, but these don't just occur in the calves. Burning discomfort in a calf area could indicate a nerve condition, however it isn't usually felt just in the calf, & wouldn't usually involve both calves.
