I had a normal first trimester screening and harmony prenatal test. Is an AFP blood test necessary? Can it come back high risk?

I had a normal first trimester screening and harmony prenatal test. Is an AFP blood test necessary? Can it come back high risk?

The msAFP is: To assess the risk of open neural tube defects i.e. Spina bifida, which is not tested by harmony or the first trimester screen. It is up to you if you would like to be screened for ntds. Keep in mind that, if detected, these defects can be repaired by a skilled pediatric neurosurgeon while the baby is still inside you. Speak to your obgyn and make an informed decision. Hope this helps. ...Read more

However, it also assures you that you & your baby are receiving excellent medical care & that all needed tests &/or referrals will be offered to you in a timely fashion. Try to stay positive & healthy. You may not have. Been able to process everything your OB said at first, so ask him/her again. ...Read more
