What at-home techniques relieve epiphora in a newborn baby? My six-week-old has watery eyes all the time, even when she is not crying. Her doctor called this epiphora. Is there anything i can do at home to help this go away?

.

Epiphora : Epiphora (poor tear drainage) in the newborn period is extremely common - 2-4% of all newborns will have it. It is usually due to an obstruction of the tear duct (newborn tear ducts are tiny!) and 95% of all cases get better on their own by the time the child is 1 years old. Two things that can help are for you to gently massage the tear ducts (inner eye corners) periodically and to use a clean wet washcloth to wipe away any occasional crusting from the tear buildup. Other than that, you will just have to wait until your child grows out of it. If your child is in the 5% that do not improve by 1 year, then your child's doctor will recommend an ophthalmologist (eye specialist) who can do a simple procedure to open the ducts. If the eye becomes red, swollen, or develops green drainage, call your child's doctor since it may be infected. ...Read more

Infants have a cry reflex that is a normal response to some stimuli, such as pain or hunger. Older children and adults cry for emotional reasons such as pain, fear, sadness, or frustration. Premature infants may not have a cry reflex, so they must be monitored closely for signs ...Read more

Is it normal for newborn to keep crying incessantly at night? My baby is less than 24 hours old

Is it normal for newborn to keep crying incessantly at night? My baby is less than 24 hours old

No: Crying is normal. Excessive crying is not normal. If the baby is less than 24 hours old and you are still in the hospital, please seek care from the nurses and doctors there since it's rare to discharge a baby before 24 hours of age. Ensure the baby is well fed and is warm. Have the baby examined by a qualified professional. ...Read more

Newborn strains to poo but not constipated, normal poo.To a point where he starts crying. Also grunts alot at night bedtime. Is this normal?Thank you

Normal: Newborns can make a lot of funny noises, including grunting, especially with gas. Having a BM can be a lot of work for a little one-- weak abdominal muscles, lying flat...so you can help him--put him in a sitting position (gravity), pull his legs up (imagine yourself trying to poo lying flat with very weak abs!) Rub his tummy, and a warm bath might help. If not better, see your pediatrician! ...Read more

Possibly: Really can't tell over the internet. If it seems tender or swollen, or if the baby is fussy, I would have him seen for sure. May want to call the baby's pediatrician and discuss it with him/her. ...Read more

My newborn baby keeps crying, i think she is constipated, what can I do to stop her pain.Please.

My newborn baby keeps crying, i think she is constipated, what can I do to stop her pain.Please.

Crying vs pain: Please do not get into the habit of equating crying with pain. Babies cry for hours every single day. This is how they communicate, stretch out their lungs, get you to come and hold them, get you to feed them. Make sure you are burping well, swaddle baby so they feel more secure, make sure baby getting enough to eat. If questions about normal stool patterns and whether she is constipated, ask doc. ...Read more

If using milk based formula then can also cause tummy ache. Baby could be colicky too.. Go see your doctor and discuss this. You will feel better and so will baby! ...Read more

My 4w newborn HATES tummy time. She can't go beyond 5 minutes without crying uncontrollably. I don't know what to do. I think she torticollis.

Not Unusual: Many newborns don't like tummy time until they're able to move around and even turn over. It's not critically important now Torticollis is a neck muscle stiffness that responds to physical therapy. If you feel your child has a head tilt or can't move the neck freely, see your doctor soon. the sooner it's recognized the faster it responds ...Read more

Newborn crying all day. No symptoms of being sick. Very fussy during breast feeding.

Newborn crying all day. No symptoms of being sick. Very fussy during breast feeding.

It gets easier with: Time to interpret your baby's cries. Unfortunately, when babies cry they swallow air. The smooth muscle of the intestine isn't synchronized yet to pass the air out. If baby seems gag when starting to nurse, he may need a burp. I'll ask my arabic-speaking daughter to help explain the " football hold" or "colic carry" to you to help baby pass gas. When all else fails, allow your baby to self-calm. ...Read more
