Ultrasound Dates: I'm a little confused as well. Early ultrasounds are much more accurate for dating. The farther along you get the ultrasound will have an error rate in the dates from plus or minus 10 to 14 days or more. It would be very unusual to change dates like this, but I would check with your doctor for further clarification. ...Read more

Is it common to have irregular periods when you first get it?

Is it common to have irregular periods when you first get it?

Some do some don't: Part of the confusion in the teen years is the great variability in how puberty effects them. Some are regular from the start, some take 6mo to a year or more, some are never regular. Persistence past 1 yr suggests a continuing issue that may be related to other problems. Work with an obgyn to sort it out if this is the case. ...Read more

Yes: In the first 1-2 years after the first menstrual periods it is normal to have irregular periods. I have irregular periods. Had a 3 day period the first of December another period at the end that lasted 5 days and just started again 3 days later.?

Is this a question?: Sorry. It's just that you never actually asked a question. Anyhow, if you have any interest in having 'regular' periods since you have dysmenorrhea your best bet would be to start on a form of an OCP (oral contraceptive pill) or some other contraceptive as it would help get you on a 'regular' cycle. Otherwise, I would accept that this is what your body is going to do. :) ...Read more

Had a d&c due to m/c on Feb 22.first period on Mar.13 but then second period was five days late. Is it normal? Neg pgt. Never had irregular periods.

Yes, normal: Even though your history is of very regular periods, 5 days late does note sound worrisome, it is considered to be within the 'normal' range of period variation. I would recommend tracking your periods over the next few months and seeing if they get back to their more normal intervals before recommending any further evaluation. ...Read more

There: There are lots of reasons for a woman to have irregular periods including:
-stress
-diet (too few calories)
-weight loss
-excessive exercise
-thyroid problem such as low thyroid hormone
-polycystic ovarian syndrome
-being within 2-3 years of starting your period (many women have irregular periods for the first 3 years)

if you are otherwise feeling well, my guess is that you fit into the last category since it has not yet been three years since you started your period.

Reasons to speak with your doctor are if you are experiencing pain, cramping, bloating, breast tenderness, bad acne, no period for more than 45 days if you are sexually active or irregular periods that continue after 3 years from starting your period. If you are having other symptoms such as weight loss or weight gain, thinning hair, constipation, dry skin, fatigue, or swelling of your neck, also call your doctor. ...Read more

It: It definitely is possible. You may not be ovulating and therefore having irregular periods. I would recommend you see your ob/gyn to further evaluate why you are having irregular periods and what can be done to correct this. They can also determine if you are ovulating, and if not, how to help with this. ...Read more

I'm on deposit I had my first shot in august and I'm overweight how will that affect me getting pregnant I alwasys had irregular periods?

Other options: Depoprovera is an effective birth control method but it does lead to appetite stimulation which can lead to weight gain. If you are already overweight consider switching to another method. Once you stop a birth control method you will return to your normal fertility state. There are no long term changes to fertility after using birth control. That is a myth. ...Read more

Tested with 25miu hpt, 19 days after sex with first morning urine. Result was negative. How accurate is the test? I have irregular periods.

Negative--repeat it: The hpts are quite accurate, but they have their limit--maybe a bit early for the test to pick-up in your case. So, waite 5-7 days and repeat the test. If still negative then, likely it is negative. If positive, congrats and call your doc for care.
Good luck. ...Read more

Many things could: Cause this issue. Your period gets affected by stress, diet and your thinking. When: When a person has cycles as irregular as yours, they are clearly not ovulating. The good news is that usually this problem is easily dealt with. It will require that you see your ob/gyn or an infertility specialist. They will typically do some simple blood tests and perhaps a semen analysis on your partner and a test to check your fallopian tubes. Based on these results they will probably prescribe a pill to help you ovulate. It is unlikely that a birth control pill will return you to regular ovulatory cycles though some doctors might start with that. Once the correct dose is found that will consistently get you to ovulate, the chance of getting pregnant is 15 to 20% per month which is close to what normal is. Hope this helps. Good luck! ...Read more

How likely is it that I can possibly be pregnant after the first time with my fiancee? I am a 8 year transplant recipient with irregular periods. My last one was in september and it was very light. He pulled out early but I am not sure if he did in time.

This: This is an educational comment to add to dr seeley's excellent response. Prior to ejaculation; pre-ejaculate which is a clear fluid; is released from the tip of the penis. Although the concentration of sperm in pre-ejaculate is much lower than that of ejacualate if can still lead to pregnancy. The pull out method during sexual intercourse is far less than ideal as a way to prevent pregnancy. Recommend using an appropriate method of birth control. Take care. ...Read more

Some: Some women do start having irregular or skipped periods at this age. You have done exactly the right things; taking a pregnancy test with plan to repeat is appropriate. But it may be that you are skipping a period. A word of caution: please read your new insurance plan language carefully. With some plans, if you mention any past concerns that you waited to address, it will not be covered as it would be considered pre-existing. ...Read more

If I have irregular periods and the last one was 3 days before I had sex for the first time and only used the withdrawal method could I be pregnant?

Maybe, maybe not: All the sexual fluids generated by a male during sex can contain living sperm, not just the main load. The "withdrawal method" will get you just as pregnant as no method at all. It can happen on any day of your menstrual cycle. Those with irregular cycles are at more risk than those with stable patterns. Do some home pregnancy tests if your period is late. ...Read more
