Don't : Don't be dejected that your child has a cavity. Be proud that as a conscientious parent, you are able to provide your child with good dental health care! if the cavity is small, the procedure is similar as with adults - local anesthetic, remove decay, fill. Children, most often than not, do better than adults at the dentist's, when they are given gentle and great care. Good luck! :). ...Read more

Though : Though there are devices to aid flossing, nothing has come out to replace it. I would suggest you get some help from your hygienist in technique. They have a lot of knowledge and are willing to share. Iwould also suggest you consider straightening - perhaps invisalign (though you would need to be evaluated to see if it would work for you). ...Read more

At what age should children start flossing and using mouthwash? Our son is almost two and does hot have a lot of teeth yet. When is the best time to start getting him to floss and use mouthwash?

.

Mouthwash : Mouthwash can be used once your child can swish and spit without swallowing. For some children that could be as young as 4 but for others not till 6. Be sure to supervise the use of a rinse until you are comfortable that your child is doing it properly and not swallowing it. In reference to flossing, i would recommend that you start flossing his teeth when the second baby molars have come in. That could be around 2 1/2 to 3 years of age. Quite often there is no space between the molars and that area needs to be flossed in order to clean the area where the teeth contact each other. The other reason for flossing at an early age is to get your child used to flossing as part of their daily hygiene routine. ...Read more

FlossSpan: Try one of the flossing devices that can be used with one hand. They look something like a slingshot with a forked end that has floss between the two forks. The other hand can be used to hold the tongue or cheeks and lips away. Also, some types of floss are 'flavored' to improved patient acceptance. ...Read more

i fight to step in front of cars or just drink a whole bolttle and die. I fight this and i feel that i m loosing. Done ; aa, na, in-patient, out-patient, religiouse and non, tried to change my enviornmet, friends, lyfes

Please : Please don't give up hope. Stepping in front of a car or drinking yourself to death is not the answer. It is clear that you care, because you are inquiring about ways to kill yourself that would keep your life insurance intact. I suspect that people who care about you, would rather have you around then the money from a life insurance policy. You have a lot on your plate. It sounds like you have chronic pain, drug and alcohol additions and urges to hurt or kill others which you take out on yourself. You do need help. You sound as though you are depleted and at the end of your rope. You wrote into this column because at least part of you wants help. I recommend that you go to the nearest er and just be completely honest about where your head is at. If you can't get to an er, you can call 911. You took the first step by writing in. The second step is to get face to face help from a professional (even if you have tried it before). Please get help. ...Read more

Sometimes : Sometimes older fillings or crowns or even decay can present a floss tearing situation. If all has been checked and the areas between your teeth are smooth it is possible to lighten the cotacts to allow for easier flossing. If there is truly a crowding situation then orthodontic movement would be necessary. Be sure to try a waxed floss. ...Read more

The : The x-ray techniques that bother you are called intraoral x-rays. This means that the dental x-ray film or digital x-ray sensor is put in your mouth. There are other types of extraoral x-rays, specifically a panoramic x-ray and cone beam x-rays. The problem is that the distance between the film and the tooth affects the quality of the image we get. The intraoral x-rays give very good two dimensional images because the film is right up against the tooth. Some dentists take panoramic film and supplement it with a few specific intraoral films. This approach might help you. ...Read more

Hello i hate when getting the traditional block why do most dentist not suggest the wand sta. Is it safe? This would hve made my life less stressful

Its not standard yet: The sta wand is a computerized anesthetic delivery system that not all dentists use for getting a patient numb. There are some very good reason for using the sta wand, however, it still uses a needle. The computer regulates a very slow flow rate that is less uncomfortable. Also, the usual numb mouth feeling can be eliminated, depending on how and where it is used. ...Read more

Really sick and tired of hemorrhoids. Is there a way to rid them for good? I drink fluids and eat fiber (yes I'm overweight). Doc says no to surgery.

Yes: Hemorrhoids are a normal part of our anatomy. We have three and each has an internal and external component. The treatment should be based upon each persons specific symptoms. Internal component can be managed with minor office procedures such as banding but external component requires surgical excision if bad. Medical therapy can cause them to shrink but by definition they cannot "go away" ...Read more
