What's the best time to take fibrate if I also take a statin?

What's the best time to take fibrate if I also take a statin?

No best time: I am not a big fan of fibrates. Especially in combination with statin. If you have to take both use very low dose statin.Combination increases risk for myopathy. Recommend to avoid combination in advanced age (> 65 years), impaired renal function (gfr < 30 ml/min), hepatic disease, females, hypothyroidism, small muscle mass. ...Read more

Gemfibrozil and simvastatin?

Gemfibrozil and simvastatin?

NOT TOGETHER: Do not use Simvastatin and Gemfibrozil together. Gemfibrozil increases the availability of simvastatin, and can when used together increase the risk of muscle related side effects. The fda has recently changed the labeling for these meds and does not recommend using them together. Used individually they can each be useful for different types of lipid disorders. Gemfibrozil can lower triglycerides. ...Read more

Is pravachol (pravastatin) effective in lowering cholesterol?

Is pravachol (pravastatin) effective in lowering cholesterol?

LDLHDLnotCholesterol: Yes/some. But Cholesterol: a fat molecule manufactured by every animal cell; building block of each cell membrane (enables fluidity & not tearing) fundamental to survival of every animal cell & animal movement. Lipoproteins (proteins which transport all fats in water outside cells) is the correct issue for artery disease (e.g. LDL ?700 nmol/l & Large-HDL ?9 µmol/l). Cholesterol ?$, but misleading. ...Read more

Is crestor better than zocor (simvastatin)? (when tg high HDL low LDL ok) . Thanks

Is crestor better than zocor (simvastatin)? (when tg high HDL low LDL ok) . Thanks

Not better-different: Both are statins, and work through the same mechanism to lower cholesterol. Crestor (rosuvastatin) is a more potent statin than zocor ( now generic as simvastatin). Crestor (rosuvastatin) is more hydrophilic (water friendly), and Simvastatin more lipophilic (fat friendly). Crestor (rosuvastatin) may also have a better drug-drug interaction profile but there are no head to head studies comparing one to the other with regard to heart dz. ...Read more

Niacin and cholesterol?

Niacin and cholesterol?

Stick with Rx. Forms: Niacin, a b vitamin, in high doses (1-2) grams a day has a positive impact on the lipid profile. Early studies done with Niacin in men with heart disease showed no mortality benefit but secondary outcomes reduced recurrent mi. It has been shown to reduce plaque buildup when combined with bile acid binding resins. Recent studies in well treated patients have been neutral, with side effect concerns. ...Read more

Tc 240, trig 45, HDL 85, LDL 146. Intolerant of statins, fibrates, Zetia (ezetimibe) and niacin.Diet good, exercise and take fish oil. Any other therapies?

Find and Fix Causes: High LDL levels may result from overproduction of LDL particles, decreased clearance of LDL particles, or both. In some cases common LDL lowering medications are not sufficient to control high LDL levels. Consideration should be given to identifyihng genetic causes (familial hypercholesterolemia), or acquired medical problems (thyroid, renal, liver, glucose related disorders) that could be present ...Read more

Is lescol stronger than lipitor, (atorvastatin) crestor?

Is lescol stronger than lipitor, (atorvastatin) crestor?

No: Lescol is weaker than those two. If your cholesterol level reaches goal, then it probably does not matter which statin you use. But if you require a higher dose, and do not reach goal even with high dose Lescol or other older drugs, then Lipitor (atorvastatin) or Crestor would be preferred. They are more potent. As they are about equally effective, price becomes an issue since Lipitor (atorvastatin) is generic now. ...Read more

Which meds besides statins and fibrates to treat high cholesterol?

It's not a statin.: Zetia (ezetimibe) is a cholesterol absorption blocker. By itself, it can lower LDL levels by 18%, which is relatively weak compared to some statins. However, when combined with a statin, it can give much more significant LDL lowering. Ask your doctor if this medication is right for you. Welchol (colesevelam) is a cholesterol absorption blocker of a different type, which may also be effective. ...Read more

Can lipitor, (atorvastatin) carvedilol, effient or Xanax increase blood sugar?

Can lipitor, (atorvastatin) carvedilol, effient or Xanax increase blood sugar?

May effect glucose: Lipitor (atorvastatin) has been associated with increased bs or hgba1c, mainly in women. Carvedilol may potentiate anti diabetic agents and actually lower blood sugar. To the best of my knowledge, xanax and Effient have no effect on blood sugar. ...Read more

Benefits/risks of Zetia vs crestor (rosuvastatin)?

Crestor (rosuvastatin) is better: Crestor (rosuvastatin) is a statin. Statins are the only cholesterol drugs that have been clearly shown to reduce mortality - that is, to save lives. While Zetia does lower cholesterol, there is to date no convincing evidence that it saves lives. ...Read more

Lovastatin, depression side effect, high cholesterol.?

Lovastatin effects: All of the statins have some side effects, the two most concerning are abnormal liver enzymes and muscle aches and pains. Both of these are evaluated with blood tests. What medications other than crestor (rosuvastatin) are available for lowering blood lipids?

What medications other than crestor (rosuvastatin) are available for lowering blood lipids?

Many types available: Crestor (rosuvastatin) is a "statin" medication, usually the class that is first choice in patients that need cholesterol lowering. There are 7 different statins available in the us, several generic now. In addition other classes of lipid altering agents can help when statins are not enough or not tolerated. Bile acid sequestrants, niacin, fibrates and ezetimibe (blocks cholesterol absorption). See a doctor. ...Read more
