I heard some cultures take 2 or 3 tablespoons of flax seeds with hot water as a natural laxative. Is that safe to do? How about daily for fiber?
Flax seed: Flax seed is indeed an excellent source of fiber, whether eaten whole on cereal or salad or washed down with water. Some recommend the ground form to enhance absorption of nutrients—omega 3's & lignans, which, when converted by body into phytoestrogens, may help prevent breast, colon, & prostate cancer. Fiber can help reduce cholesterol levels. If you have diverticulosis, be careful with seed form. ...Read more

Change diet: Try a diet with plenty of vegetables, fruit and lean meat. Every morning when you wake up drink 32 ounces of water. It's ok if it takes you 15-20 minutes to do this. Try to drink another 32 ounces of water through out the rest of the day. This should jump start your digestive tract and get it functioning properly. If this doesn't work after 3-4 days I suggest you see an MD ASAP. Good luck. ...Read more

When I eat fiber I need laxative for BM. Why is it when I have hardly any fiber I don't seem to need one? I also drink 90 oz water daily.
Fiber: Some fiber is soluble (digestible)and some, like Apple skins, raw veg are insoluble (nondigestible)and lead to more active bowel movements. I am surprised that even soluble fiber would make you constipated. You drink enough fluids for good bowel function. It's best to avoid chronic laxative use. Perhaps taking Metamucil and a stool softener daily would regulate you better. Senokot stimulates bowels. ...Read more

Go see your doctor: Because you live in australia, I don't know what's available over there with (out) a prescription so best to go see your doctor (who can also check for hypothyroidism). Avoid older antihistamines which can lead to constipation & urinary retention. Lots of different laxatives. Consider polyethylene glycol (available here in states w/o prescription), magnesium citrate, lactulose, senna, etc. ...Read more
Think "sponges.": Dietary fiber, especially Metamucil, acts like microscopic sponges in the intestines. If there is diarrhea, fiber absorbs the extra liquid and gives more form to the stool. If there is constipation, it attracts more free water into the bowel to lubricate the stool. Either way, this extra roughage has a normalizing effect to the quality of stool form. ...Read more

I am on dialysis. I cannot stand those fiber drinks. Can I take 2 colaces (docusate sodium) a day? I know the gastrointerologist does not like using laxatives.
Ask Doctor: Colace can have added sodium (docusate sodium) in it, and your nephrologist may not want you taking things that can upset your electrolytes, even if it's such a small dose through your stool softener. So, consult with him/her first, and then you'll have peace of mind. Instead of the laxative drink, you maybe could do it naturally eating organic greens/vegetables instead. ...Read more

I have hard and dry stools despite tripling my fiber intake (wh grain, metam, flaxsd). But laxatives do provide relief. Could it still be cancer?
Not cancer: Hard stools suggest that small bowel content resides in colon long periods absorbing out all fluid. Not necessary to over use fiber intake. Rather normal diet and use of stool softener like Colace (docusate sodium) should be tried. On occasion Fleets enema could be of value. ...Read more
Part of my ED recovery was ending daily laxative abuse (12-14 a day). How can I rebuild my health from the effects of said abuse? I still need to use various fiber supplements, and Metamucil regularly in order to have regular BMs, are these as bad?
Haven't had a bowel movement in 9 days. What do I do? Have tried laxatives as well as fiber bars, nothing is working.
It: It is crucial you seek medical attention. The constipation can be due to a bowel obstruction, which is best described by a small or large blockage in the intestines. Continued obstruction can cause a perforation of the bowels - where the fecal matter punctures the intestines. This can be life threatening. I recommend going to an urgent care or emergency room. If the constipation can not be relieved with enemas or other treatments, further tests, such as abdominal xray or ultrasounds studies will need to be performed. Get help. ...Read more
