Aseptic meningitis: You most likely have a mild form of NON-bacterial meningitis. Don't be alarmed because there are many, many kinds of meningitis — and probably you are thinking of the worst one! But you don't have that. You probably have a mild viral infection (enterovirus). I would call your primary to get a formal check-up. Yes: Small children can certainly have migraines but to distinguish them from other types of similar headache can be challenging.

The main question is to rule out other medical conditions which require different treatment, like sinusitis etc..

Any doc guessing that a patient may have 'life threatening' disease of any kind is counterproductive, unless based on specific findings, as would be on clinical exam or ct scan, for example. The eye signs are somewhat worrisome, but again, a good exam by a head/neck expert would be in order. ...Read more

Otherwise well?: Fever is a normal response to infection, so you don't have to completely take it away with medications. Use the medications if he is very uncomfortable. Hard to interpret the eye pain without seeing your son — as long as he is otherwise well (eating / drinking, acting normal and not confused, breathing comfortably) it is safe to wait and watch. A viral illness is the most common. Encourage fluids! ...Read more
