Does fever in children stay the same during the cold virus. My 3 year olds fever was 100.5 first 3 days and 102.5 the last 2. His congestion is better?
It cycles: Viruses are actually famous for having cyclic fevers, up one minute and gone the next. That's why schools have a 24 hour no-fever policy, since it can be difficult to tell if the illness is truly gone or if it's just in a "down cycle". As long as the fever responds 2-3 degrees to tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin and other symptoms are improving, he should be fine. ...Read more
Not sure: Need more information to be able to answer. Fever is often associated with many infections, including viral. Different viruses cause different problems and different symptoms. The amount of fever usually does not suggest a particular infection. If it is very high in a child that is not acting sick, it can be a common childhood virus. "low fever virus" is really not a classification of viruses. ...Read more
What kind of virus could cause your ALT to suddenly elevate to 74? Had nocturnal fevers for 4 nights but they dissipated.
Need more info: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, ALT of 74 is not terribly high and you may just wish to repeat it in about three months. If you take alcohol, stop entirely for there months before the test. ...Read more

Yes: Most children have higher fevers in the evening or night, and lower temps during the day. This is one of the reasons that we use the rule of 24 hours without fever before returning to school or daycare. Just because the fever may be normal in the morning doesn't mean that the child is no longer contagious. ...Read more
Fluids: Fluids should be the mainstay of treatment/nutrition in case of a fever in a toddler. He/she may not quite an appetite for solids when running a fever and I would not push anything other than liquid diet. When he/she improves, appetite naturally returns. Otherwise, if they show desire to eat, let them eat what they want. ...Read more
If my one year old has a fever from a virus....What do I do....What kind of medicine do she need?
Keep her comfortable: The most important thing to know about fevers is that they are rarely harmful. They can cause a lot of discomfort though. Our bodies create fevers to inhibit reproduction of viruses and bacteria. Fever also makes our muscles ache and we alternate feeling cold or hot. Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen can help reduce fever but may not get rid of the fever. An ice pack on the neck can also help. ...Read more
M South Indian. Why we all feel food tasteless when we have fever? Virus attacking our taste glands?
Nose problem: Taste is intimately connected to smell. With a cold, the nasal congestion dampens taste for all but the spiciest foods (those are senses through a different system). When the nose opens back up, the taste should return. ...Read more
My friend had a fever, can he drink cold water to cool him down? Does fever has any relate with viruses?
I had a virus with a fever but have been better for a day. I am still waking up drenched in sweat. Is this normal?
Night sweats: No, this isn't "normal" -- but it still is probably just the effect of your viral infection. Drenching night sweats usually mean continuing fever that breaks during the night. But if this continues a few more days, discuss with your doctor. Maybe you have some other kind of infection rather than the virus, or in addition to it. Good luck! ...Read more

There are many reasons for illness in summer time. Many viruses can cause fever with cough and cold. More important is to see your pediatrician to make sure, there is no ear infection or any other reason for the fever where he may need antibiotics.

What causes a fever? Bacteria or virus? I know its a germ that causes sickness but what causes a fever, bacteria or virus? .
Both: Bacterial and viral infections can cause fevers, in fact they are hallmark symptoms. Viral fevers tend to be lower grade as a rule, and bacterial higher. It is one way the body fights back, by basically "cooking" the pathogen in an attempt to kill it off. The mechanisms are too lengthy to describe here, but the answer is both. ...Read more

Is there a reason my 3 kids age 1, 4, & 8 all have a mild fever? Is there a virus in the MidWest currently?
Close proximity: Fevers are usually caused by infections, and most infections are transmitted either by respiratory or hand contact, so those in close proximity, like siblings are most likely to transmit infections to each other. Young children have lower immune systems, so that may be why you are not sick too. ...Read more

How healthy is it to give your 4 & 5 yr old 5 different med. To help with the fever that they just have a virus?
Reply: Overuse of any medicine is not beneficial and can be rather harmful. Fever is a physiologic response of the immune system to the offending agents it could be viral, bacterial or anything. Knowing the fever by checking with a thermometer and doing supportive measures like more fluid intake, tap water sponging for high fever can help instead to giving med back to back. ...Read more

3 viruses conf by cult. Fever. Hov @ 101. Day 4. Pulmicort caused fever. Dr wants to keep giving it. Should he be hospitalized? Help please.
Depends: Whether one should be hospitalized or not depends on the severity of the asthma. Although Pulmicort is not expected to cause a fever, there many other inhaled steroids available and thus it does no harm to just switch it to something else including inhaled steroid. Consider seeing a pediatric allergist. ...Read more
What kind of virus passes through an infant for a few hours with only fever and otherwise my daughter seems fine just slight temp of 100.5 earlier?
Too fast: Viruses generally have a longer effect upon their hosts (your daughter), I do not know of one that would initiate and be shed so quickly. Perhaps it is a minor reaction to a mild virus, or just as easily be food related or environmentally induced. Take temp several ways and see, orally, basally, by ear, armpit. If she starts to really feel unwell consult with an md. ...Read more
