The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Viral?: If it is a primary herpetic stomatitis or flu, which can be very uncomfortable, Amoxicillin will be of no use (unless to treat a secondary bacterial infection). If viral, treat symptoms, it will abate, but stay hydrated! If it is indeed bacterial (bacterial infections tend to have higher fevers) then perhaps a culture and sensitivity test for a specific antibiotic would be wise. Good luck! ...Read more

No fever, nasal congestin subsiding, thick green phlegm coighing up, pain in back of neck by glands, no fever, rattle cough?
Congestion: Green phlegm does not always mean an acute bacterial infection, i.e. the type in which you need antibiotics. Often smoldering viral infections end in this way. However, if it persists, recurs after symptoms are almost gone, or you begin developing a fever then definitely have it checked. In the meantime, treat the symptoms. ...Read more

URI: The tender swelling sounds like a swollen lymph node. The other symptoms sound like a viral illness. How long have you had your symptoms? On and off fever (hot flashes), cough which passed (now only occasional), now sore throat, yesterday neck pain, today back pain. Is this serious?
Beginnings of virus: You may have the beginnings of an infection (possibly viral). The sore throat and stiff neck are things I always recommend be evaluated by physicians since you never know what exactly is up and what testing you may need. Take your temperature with a thermometer to document how much (if any) of a fever you have, start drinking plenty of fluids. Make sure your nutritional status is good ; get seen. ...Read more
