Fetal Fibronectin (Definition)

Fetal fibronectin is a protein that lies between the amniotic sac and the uterine lining. It serves as a glue that holds the sack in place. It is used as a chemical marker to predict people at risk for preterm labor.

What is the fetal fibronectin test?

What is the fetal fibronectin test?

To rule out PTL.: Fetal fibronectin is a protein that is thought to be the "glue" connecting the baby's amniotic sac to the wall of the mom's uterus. In preterm labor, this glue breaks down and leaks out into the vagina. The fetal fibronectin test checks for the presence of this protein in the vagina. If the test is negative, preterm labor (ptl) is unlikely. If the test is positive, it doesn't mean much. ...Read more

What are good results for a fetal fibronectin measurement?

What are good results for a fetal fibronectin measurement?

Negative.: Feal fibronectin is a protein that should not be detected at the cervix - unless labor/delivery is impending. Negative ffn has been used to reassure women and obstetricians that delivery is not likely within a week in cases of preterm labor. Most mfm experts doubt its clinical usefulness, as most of the time it is the maternal cervical examination and not the ffn that dictates medical management. ...Read more

What do you suggest if positive result fetal fibronectin test?

Preterm labor; fFN: Fetal fibronectin can be described as the "glue" that attaches the membranes of the amniotic sac to the side wall of the uterus. If the "glue" starts to leak out giving you a positive test, then you are at greater risk to deliver prematurely. Your risk of early labor is higher since your test is positive. Treatment options include, bed rest, steroids and close observation. ...Read more

How quickly did you deliver after a positive fetal fibronectin test?

Fetal fibronectin: A positive fetal fibronectin is not as useful for patient management as a negative fetal fibronectin. If you get a negative fetal fibronectin there is approximately a 94% chance that you will not deliver within a 2 week time period. With a positive fetal fibronectin, there is about a 50% chance of delivery within a 2 week time period. The test doesn't really tell you how fast you will deliver. ...Read more

I am 32 weeks pregnant and i wanted to know how accurate a fetal fibronectin test was and if there was a physical way to know if your water breaks?

Negative: Fetal Fibronectin is very accurate when the test is negative. At 32 weeks, if FFN is negative and cervical length is > 3.5cm then the chances of preterm delivery is 7%. Did your doctor measure your cervical length as well? If cervical length is 2.6-3.5 and FFN negative then chance of preterm delivery is 13%. Amnisure is a great test to rule out if your water has broken, or nitrazine with fern ...Read more
