What cancers do 1 chest CT scan cause?

What cancers do 1 chest CT scan cause?

Non: The potential for a cat scan of the chest causing cancer is non. One would need frequent scans to even be associated with cancer. Obviously in a very young patient, the tissue is more sensitive to radiation and as such radiation to the chest from mammograms are of no consequence in the patient over 50, but in a patient under 30 radiation exposure does put the patient at risk. ...Read more

Cancer (Definition)

Cancer is a group of diseases that is characterized by uncontrolled cell growth leading to invasion of surrounding tissues that spread to other parts of the body. Cancer can begin anywhere in the body and is usually related to one or more genetic mutations that allow normal cells to become malignant by interfering with internal cellular control mechanisms, such as programmed cell death or by preventing ...Read more

Can chest CT with contrast rule out trachea cancer?

Can chest CT with contrast rule out trachea cancer?

Possibly: The cancer would have to be a certain size to be visible. So if it were large enough to be seen, then the diagnosis could be made. Not visible may mean it is too small to be seen with ct. ...Read more

Please tell me if a single chest CT scan can lead to cancer? I am worried about cancer risk.

Please tell me if a single chest CT scan can lead to cancer? I am worried about cancer risk.

CT scan risk: There are items that can increase the lifetime risk of cancer. A single ct chest scan will increase that risk more than an xray. But if you need the ct chest scan, than the benefits can outweigh the risk. Smoking is a much worse avoidable risk factor for cancer. Also, to decrease cancer risk, eat a healthy diet including fruits and vegetables and reduce red meat. ...Read more

Super bad anxiety about radiation from 1 chest CT at 30 years old almost 3 yrs ago? Worried about getting cancer from it. Help!!

Super bad anxiety about radiation from 1 chest CT at 30 years old almost 3 yrs ago? Worried about getting cancer from it. Help!!

Use HealthTap Prime.: 1st, the exposure's in the past. There's nothing that can "undo" the effects, so don't worry. The only thing you can do is look forward: understand risks & benefits of CT scans, ASK your doctor if there are alternative ways to make a diagnosis, & LIMIT exposure so scans are used wisely. At 30 yrs age, your body isn't growing fast. Use HT Prime to discuss effects that take place 20-30 yrs hence. GL ...Read more

Is it possible to damage DNA from single chest CT scan which can lead to cancer later in life? If yes then how long it will take to develop?

Is it possible to damage DNA from single chest CT scan which can lead to cancer later in life? If yes then how long it will take to develop?

Stop worrying: Your dna is being damaged constantly as you go about your business. Your own body, especially your potassium atoms, are radioactive, and you are being bombarded constantly by cosmic rays. Scans are only one of thousands of sources of radiation. You can't avoid it, the exposure you get in a scan is hopefully worth the benefit, and you need keep it in perspective and get on with living your life. ...Read more

I have been reading about danger of CT scan and the cancer risk later in life. I had one chest ct. Is it possible to get cancer later from that CT?

I have been reading about danger of CT scan and the cancer risk later in life. I had one chest ct. Is it possible to get cancer later from that CT?

Not likely: We are all exposed to radiation all the time in low amounts. Ct scans do expose a person to small amount of radiation, but these tests provide a lot of useful information. It is not likely that you will get cancer, that you were not going to get otherwise, by having one ct. ...Read more

3 chest ct scans within a 5 month period (two within the same day). I was 25 at the time. Is it highly likely I could develop cancer from those scans?

3 chest ct scans within a 5 month period (two within the same day). I was 25 at the time. Is it highly likely I could develop cancer from those scans?

Just the opposite: It is highly unlikely that a patient develops cancer from just having 3 consecutive chest CT scans. Life in the modern world causes cancer (and of course there was cancer before modern times), but having 3 CT scans will make no noticeable difference when compared to everything else we face in life. In California, we have "useless" signs posted everywhere, warning about cancer-causing substances. ...Read more

Would a chest ct show bone cancer in ribs?

Would a chest ct show bone cancer in ribs?

It would if: There is enough bone destruction or reactive changes. If the cancer/metastasis is small or has not yet caused much rib destruction or sclerosis, it may be difficult to see on a routine chest CT. ...Read more

How can I convince my md to give me a chest ct? I'm petrified I already have cancer somewhere from smoking.

Weigh benefits: Many physicians are now screening smokers with chest ct's from time to time, excising the little cancers that can only be seen on ct. This has brought about a considerable increase in the number of lung cancers found and "cured" but has had very little impact on total deaths. But if you are "petrified" your emotional state alone might justify one of these pop screens. Good luck. ...Read more

Can one chest CT cause harm to the cells or soft tissue of the lungs? Is cancer possible? I m 30yr old male.

Can one chest CT cause harm to the cells or soft tissue of the lungs? Is cancer possible? I m 30yr old male.

Doubtful: Cumulative radiation exposure is known to induce cancers, but 1 ct scan is not alot of radiation, relatively speaking, though it may equal the amount of radiation exposure of several hundred chest x-rays. Be your own advocate if confronted with a recommendation that you undergo repeated ct scans. ...Read more

I had one chest CT with 4.8msv dose, is it too much radiation? Will it cause cancer years later? I am worried about cancer risk. Please help!

Stop worrying buddy: Pilots get an extra 3 mSV every year and nobody's shown an increased cancer risk. Be thankful for good health and the technology that will detect serious disease while it's treatable. ...Read more

Terrified I am going to get cancer from a chest ct scan I had 2 years ago at 30 yr old, had other X-rays in lifetime, but only 1 ct. Truly scared : (?

Wait to worry: You have very little if any reason to be terrified because you have had some X-rays done. Medical use of X-rays including a CT scan can not cause cancer so soon or ever... unless you have had more than 10 times the normal use of X-rays (most people can safely have 5 to 10 CT scans before any concerns for harm/cancer should arise). I hope this helps your Mind to rest in peace ...Read more

Is it possible to get Liver Cancer from one chest CT scan? Please help. Worried.

Is it possible to get Liver Cancer from one chest CT scan? Please help. Worried.

No, not even 2 scans: Patients get CT scans all over the world, every day. As long as there is a good reason for the scan, it is fine to do. If repeated scans are planned, to follow some sort of serious illness, a patient can ask his doctor what other options there are, in order to decrease the total number of scans in his lifetime. Having repeated CT scans, over and over, can add up to much x-ray exposure. ...Read more

Can one chest CT scan damage lung and cause lung cancer?

Can one chest CT scan damage lung and cause lung cancer?

Not likely: The natural exposure one might get just from where you live may exceed 3msv per year. Living in denver, you might be exposed to 6msv per year. Risk of developing cancer from a properly conducted ct scan is low. I believe the estimated average radiation exposure for a single chest ct is about 5-7msv. A low dose chest ct is about 2msv. ...Read more

Computed Tomography (Definition)

Ct uses xrays taken an 360 degrees combined with a computer to see"inside" the body. The table moves as the xray tube and detectors spin around the patient 10 times a second or more! The image shows excellent soft tissue detail, enhanced with injection of intravenous contrast or oral contrast. This way the body is shown in slices, in any plane, usually axially, but ...Read more
