What can cause a lump feeling in the throat that you cannot cough up but feels like you need to burp and can't?

Drainage, inflamed: This sensation is often caused by sinus drainage that causes inflammation in the back of the throat. This can cause a sensation of "fullness" in the back of the throat. Another thing that can cause this is reflux (acid, heartburn). Try an antihistamine (zyrtec, allegra, etc) and some saline nasal spray for a few days. If reflux is possible, add a Pepcid - if that doesn't help, see your doctor. ...Read more

Get evaluated.: Anytime you feel a sense of food or fluids "sticking" at a specific place, I am concerned that there may be a narrowing in the esophagus. This may be as simple as irritation from a capsule that got stuck to something more complicated like a tumor. Needless to say, you need the information. Your doctor may refer you to a gastroenterologist, or send you for some imaging studies first. Good luck. ...Read more

What can cause a lump-in-throat sensation immediatly after burping? I don't think I belched up acid, but...

Reflux: The lump I'm the throat feeling is most likely from reflux. Stay away from acidic foods and eat healthier and you should be ok. The lump in the throat is due to the spasm of the cricopharyngeal muscle which is the upper esophageal sphincter. When there is acid in the lower esophagus it will tighten and cause that sensation. Go online and research acidic foods to see what foods to avoid. ...Read more

Probably GERD: Gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) can present in many different ways. Most people expect heartburn symptoms, but many people with GERD never notice heartburn. Instead, the symptoms you describe, including belching, lump or fullness in the throat, and a foreign body sensation are very common. I suggest trying an over the counter product like ranitidine. Avoid booze, caffeine, tobacco and large meals. ...Read more

Monitoring Centers: Lymphatic system absorbs/carries things too big to go into the arteries/veins like bacteria eaten by white cells and digested food. Lymph nodes "taste" the lymph for anything bad like bacteria/viruses/cancers, etc. When it detects a problem, it alerts the immune system and your body reacts. They enlarge in response to the inflammation they create when they react. They shrink when all is well. ...Read more

Possible LERD: Exposure of the vocal cords to stomach acid & pepsin will result in inflammation of the vocal cords (as is also often seen with acid regurgitation) = lerd. Acute laryngitis may result, but watch out for chronic hoarseness, throat clearing, airway spasms, cough, bronchitis, an asthma-type presentation, & even a higher risk of throat cancer. May however not be reflux so please get yourself checked. ...Read more

Lump in throat feeling and throat-burping; worse when I am hungry or due to lack of sleep. Any reason?

I'm sure there is...: ..a reason for your symptoms, but unfortunately, a 20-word post to doctors who know nothing about you will not get you a reason over the Internet. There is a disclaimer that applies to HealthTap activities, which is that the doctors on it don't diagnose or treat anybody. It sounds like something that an ORL or GI doc would see. Although with NHS I imagine you have to start with a GP. ...Read more

My throat becomes sore and dry after belching along with the feeling of a 'lump.' lansoprazole hasn't prevented this.

Could it be stress?: When taken together, globus sensation ("feeling of a lump"), air swallowing with resulting belching, & dry mouth/ throat are most consistent with stress/anxiety. So can be your "pounding heart & headache." Lansoprazole only reduces acid, not stress. I see you're taking diazepam--does this medication reduces the above symptoms? Managing your stress (& reasons for same) may be your key to relief. ...Read more

May be concerning: If a person truly feels like there is something stuck in her throat, she can be evaluated at Emergency Room. I want to know why do I feel like I have something in my throat and when I try to burp something want to go up my throat but cannot get out?

Hard to say: When a person feels like something is in the throat but they are able to swallow normal size portions of food it's not likely anything is actually blocking or sitting in the esophagus (food tube). Sometimes gastro-esophageal reflux can cause stomach contents to "go backward" up the esophagus and even reach the throat. Should the above symptoms persist see a physician. For Reflux info:bit.
