Complicated problem: A physician will need to consider more information before providing advise: such as frequency of symptoms, onset, associated nasea/diarrhea/constipation as well as other non-gut related symptoms, medications and past medical history. You might consider a virtual consult or discussion with your primary doctor. The sensation of gas and bloating can be concerning. ...Read more

What is causing me to burp constantly? It feels like there is gas stuck in my chest and the pressure is giving me headaches.

This : This sounds like gerd (gastroesophageal reflux disease) aka acid reflux. When too much acid is produced in your stomach it flows back up into the esophagus causing burning and burping. Headaches can also result from this problem, but are not as common. Gerd can be managed by eating less acidic foods, spicy foods, chocolate and caffeine. Also acid blockers (i.e. Pepcid) or proton pump inhibitors (i.e.Prolosec otc) can be used to help reduce symptoms. On the other hand chest pressure can also be cardiac in origin. Things such as angina can mimic gerd. This occurs when your heart muscle is not getting enough oxygen, and can ultimately lead to a heart attack. I recommend making an appointment with your pcp (primary care provider) sooner rather than later. A more detailed history and physical along with diagnostic tests will provide a diagnosis, and treatment can be started. ...Read more

GERD / H. pylori: Your symptoms are consistent with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The pain and burping is caused from acid coming up from the stomach into the esophagus. The stomach acid causes irritation to the esophagus which can lead to serious problems. H. pylori is a bacteria that can live in the stomach and can cause GERD. H. pylori can be cured. Consider having a blood test for H.pylori. ...Read more

Consider this...: Aerophagia (swallowed air) distends stomach & may result in burping. Also, gassiness/ stomach distension after meals can reflect: 1) partial gastric outlet obstruction due to gastritis/ulcer; 2) pyloric narrowing from scar;3) gastroparesis due to delayed stomach emptying (as w/diabetic gut neuropathy); 4) bacterial overgrowth in gut; 5) any malabsorption; 6) pancreatic maldigestion; 7) ibs; 8) more. ...Read more

Feels like food is stuck on my chest for a few hours, no problem swallowing liquids. Have the urge to force myself to burp?

Hi: If liquids pass you probably do not have a blockage as they would come back up too. You might have irritated your lower esophagus. Liquid antacids might be the best to try at first and dose four times a day. You might need to treat up to two weeks and Zantac OTC would be easier. If your symptoms have been there longer then you need to seek further evaluation and treatment and possibly a scope. ...Read more
