Biopsy is much more useful. A positive ANA test is not diagnostic of DLE and a negative result does not exclude it. ANA needs to be interpreted along with clinical findings and results of other tests. You may consult the article listed below and discuss the matter with your doctor.

Not sure what your exact question is, are you referring to Lupus? You would always need serology to diagnose lupus, other skin lesions can mimic lupus malar rash.

Biopsy?: First, the diagnosis of DLE would require more than a positive RNP. Obviously, the appearance of a DLE could lead to the diagnosis. A skin biopsy can be confirmatory. I was diagnosed with SLE and DLE some 28 years ago. My Rheumatologist prescribed 4mg Medrol and Plasmaquin. Even on the medication I get septic wounds, which I eventually have surgically removed. Is there alternative medication available?

Dx is confirmed by biopsy. Also, review medications r,as some medications can cause a lupus like syndrome. Lupus has multiple criteria and there is usually a battery of antibody tests done., tests may initially be negative and later turn positive. F/u w/ rheumatology for second opinion
