Doctor insights on: Fat Vs Water Soluble Statins

Share

Statins (Definition)

Several drugs exist which lower cholesterol by inhibiting an enzyme in liver cells (hmg-coa reductase) that is involved in cholesterol synthesis. These all have generic names that end in -statin, e.g. Atorvastatin (lipitor) and Simvastatin (zocor). Since nearly all of the meds in this class have been shown to have similar cardiovascular benefits, we often discuss them ...Read more

Fat soluble vit vs. Water soluble? What's the difference between the two?

Fat soluble vit vs. Water soluble? What's the difference between the two?

Vitamins: Fat soluble vitamins are vitamins A, D, E, and K. All of the other vitamins are water soluble and tend to get excreted in urine. Solubility is a property of a substance to be soluble, like orange juice concentrate stirring into water as an example of water solubility. Some substances are happier in a lipid or fat environment and are not water soluble, like oil. Vitamins are like this too. Read more

Is magnesium fat or water soluble? Is taking too much toxic? How do I know when to stop as tests are not very indicatve right?

Magnesium=necessary: Magnesium is a water soluble mineral that most people are whole-body deficient in. At high doses, it causes diarrhea. If the kidneys are compromised in any way, the dose needs to be lower and monitored by a physician. A RBC magnesium level is the most useful test as serum magnesium is kept at a very steady level. Magnesium is necessary to 300+ reactions in the body. Read more

What exactly is the difference between water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins?

What exactly is the difference between water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins?

Vitamins: Fat soluble (a, d, e, k) have to be processed for absorption with enzymes that digest fat. They can be stored in fatty storage areas so if too much taken, toxicity can occur. Vitamin d from sun is controlled by body's storage and processing to avoid that. Water soluble vitamins typically not stored so need to be taken daily. Read more

I know vitamins B are water-soluble and doesn't need fat to dissolve, but it's better to take them with food? And what's the difference.

I know vitamins B are water-soluble and doesn't need fat to dissolve, but it's better to take them with food? And what's the difference.

Yes, better because:: B vitamins will be will absorbed when taken with or without food, but some people experience nausea if taking a strong B complex on an empty stomach. Also, B vitamins play an important role in metabolizing our food and are mostly not retained long so are likely to be most beneficial when taken shortly before, with or after meals. Read more

How come glucose is soluble in water and naphthalene is not?

How come glucose is soluble in water and naphthalene is not?

Oil & water don't mix: Water molecules have positive and negative regions, making them polar. Other polar molecules, such as glucose or ethanol, mix easily w/ water. Some organic compounds with only carbon (c) and hydrogen (h) are not polar, and repel water, forming separate blobs or layers if put into a container w/ water. Naphthalene c10h8 is such a molecule, . Which is better to take on a regular basis, ubiquinol that is water-soluable or non-water soluble? Thanks!

Which is better to take on a regular basis, ubiquinol that is water-soluable or non-water soluble? Thanks!

CoQ10: Some people have less effective fat digestion and absorption. Ubiquinone is therefore less well absorbed. Because it is effectively water soluble, ubiquinol is expected to be better digested and absorbed. There are some studies looking at blood levels that suggest this is accurate. Typically dose is lower using ubiquinol, partly for this reason. Read more
