People with Huntington disease (HD) have inherited a genetic mutation in a specific gene right at the tip of one of their 4th chromosomes. They can't give this to you like a cold or the flu, even if they tried. Our friends and relatives with HD very much need us to help them, so don't be shy about staying close and showing that you care. We'll all appreciate that!

Which foods should be avoided by people with Huntington's Disease?

Choking hazards

No specific food needs to be avoided. It is the size and consistency of the food that matters. In early stages of Huntington's you need to be sure that food servings won't cause choking like large pieces of hot dog or meat. In late stages of Huntington's, foods that are too liquid may cause aspiration, so thickeners may be needed.

Which nutritional supplements have been recommended for people with Huntington's Disease?

High calorie diet

Diet
Several supplements have been tested in Huntington's patients, but no significant advantages have been found. A high calorie diet improves well-being because Huntington patients consume much energy with their increased movements. The best non-pharmacologic care remains a safe, padded environment and support for depression and suicidal tendencies.

Dr. Robert Kwok answered:

Is there a test for Huntington's Disease?

Yes

Mutation
To determine whether someone has Huntington's disease, a gene analysis can be done to detect whether or not a repeating-CAG mutation is present on the Huntington gene. If the CAG sequence in the gene repeats too many times, the gene is abnormal. A meeting with a genetic counselor before and after the test is recommended to determine need for the test and to discuss the results of the test.

Dr. Justin ORourke answered:

Is there a cure for huntington's disease?

Available Treatments

Neurologist
No, but treatments are becoming available. In 2008, tetrabenazine was the first FDA approved drug for chorea in HD; discuss this option with your neurologist. Combining medication and psychotherapy can be effective for addressing mood symptoms in HD. There is no effective treatment for cognitive symptoms at the moment. Unfortunately, treatments help with symptoms but not the progression of HD.
