What is the difference between psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors and family therapists?

Medications: Of all that you mentioned, except for very rare exceptions, psychiatrists are the only ones with a medical degree who can prescribe medications. Can a family therapist really help with a relationship between my parents and me?

Can a family therapist really help with a relationship between my parents and me?

Yes: But you said it yourself. They can "help" - they can't do it alone. At the best - communication can be guided so things can heal. At the worst someone experienced and skilled will be able to evaluate risk of violence and protect the members of the family. Also, they can help find alternatives that are safe if the old relationships cannot be sustained. It is worth a try! good luck. ...Read more

How to open up to family counselors/therapists?

Find the right one: A good counselor or therapist will spend some time making you feel comfortable. You can prepare yourself by getting ready--make a few notes about what you want to talk about, and make the appointment at a time when you aren't rushed so that you can put your full attention into the visit. Turn off your cell phone! remember that talking about these things is uncomfortable for most people! ...Read more

Have bipolar2and avoidant pd. mental health therapist interviewed family without me present. is this typical? am angry i wasnt present.

Ethical quandary: If it was not an assessment for safety issues (psychiatric emergency assessment for suicide / homicide / or failure to manage one's basic safety independantly), then your consent is required for such an interview to occur. Adults who retain decisional capacity (not currently under guardianship or active POA), do not lose their right to privacy simply due to a psychiatric diagnosis. ...Read more

I have severe fatigue, no motivation, no energy. I sleep fine and really have no stress. I have seen therapists and family doctors.

If doctors have not: found a medical explanation and therapy has not been helpful, and if you have not yet had a psychiatric evaluation, then consider one. There are many possible explanations but must consider if depression and/or chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), a debilitating and complex disorder characterized by profound fatigue, may be producing your symptoms. Best regards for relief. ...Read more

I've recently been experiencing panic attacks, should I see a family doctor or a therapist for treatment? I'm not sure if there is something wrong with physically that would cause the attacks.

I've recently been experiencing panic attacks, should I see a family doctor or a therapist for treatment? I'm not sure if there is something wrong with physically that would cause the attacks.

See both: If you've not had a physical recently, please see your family physician for this. You're right that some physical conditions may predispose to panic attacks. Stop caffeine, and if you're also on other stimulants, speak with your physician about those. Please also see a therapist about your anxiety, and try not to only use medications for panic attacks (although they can definitely help!). ...Read more

Can a child therapist work only with little kids or with the whole family?

Most Kid +: Most of the therapists i work with include family/parent interviews as a way to understand family dynamics. These interviews may be conducted with or separate from the kid. As treatment evolves, the focus is on the kid but may be modified to include others as treatment progresses. No "one size fits all" approach will work with the diverse issues involved. ...Read more

What can I do if I feel anexious and my family don't want me to see a therapist. I just had nervous break-down as a result of my disengagement?

Anxious: I'm sorry to hear of your broken engagement, and your family's reluctance for you to get help with your feelings. Something like this requires time for healing, but if you've had a "nervous breakdown" from it, you need to at least see your family physician. Perhaps s/he can help evaluate your needs, and impress this upon your family. Might your church have counselors that family would approve? ...Read more

This is odd-is it possible for a person who is under a ton of stress to "lose time"? I have a therapist and know this forum is not meant to treat or diagnose; i just want another opinion. I am under a ton of family and work stress and i "lost" 2 days. I

How "lost": I agree that a physical problem needs to be ruled out. But what exactly happened those 2 days? To protect itself, the brain under stress can "zone out" or "forget" things if they are to stressful or the brain feels seriously overwhelmed by painful feelings or too much info. It may be that if you address the stressful situation, these symptoms will go away too. But i think you need to do it soon. ...Read more
