Fallopian Tube (Overview)

Aka oviduct, uterine tube, or salpinx. It is basically a small tube connecting between the ovary and the uterus. This tube carries the eggs from the ovary area to the unterus. This is the tube that is cut/tied-up/or burned in women having the tuboligation procedure for permanent birth control purpose. Have fun learning. Good luck.

What are the fallopian tubes?

What are the fallopian tubes?

Fallopian tubes: Fallopian tubes are paired tubular structures, right and left, that connect the uterus to the pelvic cavity. The tube picks up an egg (oocyte) after ovulation at its far end and transports it down towards the uterus. If the woman had intercourse sperm swims through the uterus into the tube at the near end, when conception occurs it is in the mid-portion of the tube.

No: You can sometime have them put back together or have a reanastomosis if their is enough tube left to perform that procedure. It is hard to know if their is enough tube for sure prior to performing the surgery. Need to consult with a specialist. Also, you could consider IVF - this is very successful method to help achieve a pregnancy after having a tubal. Hope this helps.

Can't heal: After coagulation (burning) the tubal segment is denatured - and its dead, so it can't truly heal. Sometimes tubal ligations done this way do fail because the 'burned' part develop a fistula (a hole) that leaves the tube open. This is not healing though, the tube is still abnormal.

How will you know if your fallopian tube is close?

How will you know if your fallopian tube is close?

Take a HSG test: A hysterosalpingogram or hsg test is an x-ray dye test that makes sure that both fallopian tubes are open and look normal. It also checks for an abnormal-shaped uterus, for polyps, fibroids or scar tissue inside the uterus, and for scar tissue around the fallopian tubes. Ultrasound scans with contrast can also check for at least one open tube, but it's not as good a test as a hsg.
