Is it normal & psychologically healthy for children to sleep in the same bed with a parent?

Is it normal & psychologically healthy for children to sleep in the same bed with a parent?

The AAP, in your: Hometown, has a healthy child app that addresses sleep issues. In many cultures, the "family bed" is a necessity. Infants who learn to fall asleep in their own beds by 1-4 months consolidate sleep & night-wake less. Co-sleeping can impede a child's development of independent self-calming skills, if it's not a cultural norm. Family therapy would help everyone get to sleep in his/her own bed. ...Read more

Will a flat spot on a child's head, older than 2 years old, continue to minimize over time as their head grows? We were told our sons head would round

The practice of: putting babies to sleep on their backs has contributed to more "flat heads." Some have treated this with a helmut, usually at 4-12 months of age, though it is not clear this is more effective than trying to avoid lying on back during the day.As the child and his skull grows, the flattening will improve. It may not be perfectly symmetrical, but is not a cosmetic/social/brain development problem ...Read more

Is it mental abuse for daycare workers to argue with parents in front of children?

Is it mental abuse for daycare workers to argue with parents in front of children?

Certainly no help: Whether or not this constitutes mental abuse is probably a matter of degree and definition. The obvious question is why this conversation was begun in the presence of the children, and how it degenerated into an argument. Neither party appears to be acting like thoughtful adults, and the children will certainly not benefit from observing and then potentially copying this behavior. ...Read more

Is it important for adults to chaperone HS kids even on a church outing?

Kids are kids: It's always important to remember that kids are going to be kids, church or no. As a pediatrician, i very definitely know that church going kids are only a little bit less likely to engage in inappropriate behavior and sexual activity. There should always be proper adult supervision and monitoring of behavior on outings. You don't need to have "room for the holy ghost" but look for normal behavior. ...Read more

My 12 yr. Old son falls asleep doing schoolwork, homework, and chores; but is alert when watching t.V. Or playing video games, is this adhd?

Maybe: Tv and video games are geared for a 4 second attention span. Most 2 year olds have longer attention spans than that. The 4 second attention span keeps your son alert via a neural reflex. It also lowers his attention span for the real world. Research states of those who watch 1 hour a day 9% will lower their attention span to add levels. 2 hours lowers 18% and 3 hrs 27%. Limit both to 45 min/day. ...Read more
