Hiv infection is caused by a retrovirus....This retrovirus binds to CD4 cells (for the most part). You may detect the virus by several different methods. An elisa test (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay). You may also detect it by doing a test referred to as a western blot (a gel protein electrophoresis). Thirdly by pcr (polymerase chain reaction) which ...Read more
Fingered someone with a superficial cut on finger. 8weeks CMIA duo P24 HIV 1&2 test negative. Further testing required? Conclusive ?thanks!
Conclusive: This was a zero risk exposure, or close to it. Nobody has ever been known to catch HIV by fingering, even with cuts on the fingers. In any case, the test you had is conclusive any time 4 weeks or more after the exposure. There is no secondary window period (which you might have read about online-- an urban myth). No more testing is needed. ...Read more
I did a DNA PCR test for HSV & i got the result: -humanes herpesvirus-dna ((typ 7, pcr) (eb) : negative limit of detection:100 copies/ml.So i'm clean?
Hsv-7 isn't detected: Your question will require some clarification since you stated being tested for herpes simplex virus, the result you describe tests for human herpesvirus type7, which cannot be detected by pcr testing below 100 copies per ml . Hhv-7 is not the same as hsv. Though theyboth belong to the same heresviridae family. ...Read more

Could you come positive in a RNA HIV test but
not in a HIV antibody test? After 6 months from exposure
Wrong calculatiions : The HIV antibody negative period (the "window") is no more than 3 mo (More recent and sensitive testing can make it 1 month). The RNA HIV test is much more expensive but can detect HIV in a matter of a fe days- weeks. I would review the last 6 months and determine if you were at risk for getting HIV within the last 3 momths . ...Read more
Took oraquick test 6wk after protected sex w/ Asian massage lady(status unknown). Read that HIV antibodies form in 2-4wk. Is result likely accurate?
Took HIV Antibody 1&2 Test and P24 Antigen test 10 days after PEP. Results non-reactive. A bit early. All other blood panel metrics normal. Thoughts?
Not conclusive: These results are reassuring; it is unlikely you were infected. However, the results are not conclusive. Following PEP, it is necessary to test for HIV longer than otherwise, maybe up to 4 months. (PEP is great when needed, but it prolongs the time of uncertainty about whether infection occurred.) Discuss with the clinic or doctor who prescribed the PEP and follow his or her advice. ...Read more
