Don't panic: 1) The scan is not the pt; you are. 2) Operative word here is "mild." Those findings may cause no symptoms at all. 3) In medicine and especially in this sort of situation, 1 picture = 1000 words. Your doc ordered the scan for a reason. Look at the images with your doc and have them interpret them for you, or find you someone who can. You have a right to an explanation in terms you understand. ...Read more

Hypertrophy (Definition)

Hypertrophy is an increase in size of an organ or tissue, or a particular part of the body. Examples include muscle hypertrophy due to lifting weights, ventricular hypertrophy (enlargement of a ventricle of the heart) due to high blood pressure or other heart disorders, or prostatic hypertrophy (enlargement of ...Read more

Degenerative: Basically refers to degenerative (aging) changes of the spine. Disk/osteophyte refers to bone spur and/or disc protrusion, and facet/uncovertebral hypertrophy refers to arthritis of the joints at the back part (facets) and sides (uncovertebral) of the vertebrae. Ventral thecal sac deformity and ventral cord flattening refer to slight pressure on the spinal cord. Stenosis refers to pinched nerve. ...Read more

What is mild facet and ligamentous hypertrophy?

Facet Arthropathy: Could be facet arthropathy/arthritis. There are joints in the spine where the bones articulate and can develop bone spurs and cause the clicking with pain typically with extension. I would consider seeing a pain/spine specialist to see if facet injections or radio frequency ablation would be helpful for you. ...Read more

What is bilateral facet and ligamentous hypertrophy?

What is bilateral facet and ligamentous hypertrophy?

Facet Ligament hyper: The process of degeneration in the back part of the spinal canal. The joint (facet) breaks down and will increase (hypertrophy) in size. This is a normal aging process is most spines. If the enlargement compresses nerves, leg pain may clinically be present. ...Read more

Depends: Most disks get better within 6 months with pt and conservative treatment, assuming that the disk is even related to the pain. Keep an eye on spondy to make sure it's stable. If you develop instability surgery may be in order. ...Read more

What is facet hypertrophy with 2 mm anterolisthesis?

Malalignment: Degeneration of the spine occurs typically with some disk dehydration followed by facet joint enlargement (hypertrophy). In some patients this will lead to joint capsule laxity allowing the vertebrae to slide forward on the vertebrae below. This is called an anterolisthesis or spondylolisthesis. ...Read more

What is facet hypertrophy?

What is facet hypertrophy?

Arthritis: The spine has disks and facet joints at each level. The disks in the front of the spine begin to wear initially. This is followed by loss of height at the disk and then the facet joints begin to wear out. The body builds bone spurs around the joint which is facet hypertrophy in an attempt to stabilize the joint. This is typical of arthritis in hips, knees, knuckles etc. ...Read more

What is bilateral facet and ligamentum flavum hypertrophy?

Neck arthritis: This means that you have quite a bit of cervical spine arthritis. The nerves that exit from your spine going towards your shoulder and arms are being compressed due to the bony arthritic overgrowth. Some people who have this have no symptoms. Others can have severe neck pain and arm pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, and muscle loss. Hope this helps! ...Read more

What are the causes of moderate facet joint hypertrophy?

What are the causes of moderate facet joint hypertrophy?

Aging and: Aging will lead to degeneration of the facet joints as can injury or trauma which can accelerate this process as can smoking which degenerates the discs which alters the mechanics of the spine segments creating more stresses on the facet joints leading to degeneration. Underlying rheumatologic conditions will affect these joints too. ...Read more

What does multilevel ligamentum flavum hypertrophy and facet arthropathy mean?

What does multilevel ligamentum flavum hypertrophy and facet arthropathy mean?

Degenerative changes: OBernstein,

These are descriptive terms usually found in an MRI or CT report to characterize the condition of your spine. The ligamentum flavum helps connect spinal segments and overlies the spinal cord. The facet joints are in the posterior portion of the spinal column and can show degenerative changes like all other joints in the body. Facet joint issues are a common cause of back pain. ...Read more

What is facet hypertrophy l Flatten the ventral thecal sac and encroach upon the lateral recesses abutment of the traversing nerve roots?

Pain and weakness: Can result from compression of the nerves that exit at the level of the narrowing caused by bony overgrowth of the facets (the area where the vertebral bones meet) In the lumbar region the nerves exit at a higher level and "traverse" the space next to the facets below this before they exit the spinal canal at a lower level. Discuss this with your doctor. ...Read more

Ouch!: You're young to have this, unless you're prior military or did a lot of weight-bearing. Get to your ideal body weight. Strengthen core muscles with physical therapy/Pilates. Try oral NSAIDs & consider short oral steroid burst. No opioids/narcotics - more a curse than blessing. Try a TENS unit, acupunture, tilt table, hot/cold packs & last resort facet joint steroid injections/blocks. Hang in there ...Read more

What does it mean when you have a Mild circumferential disc bulge, and mild facet and ligamentum flavum hypertrophy including small facet effusions. S?

Early degeneration: It is a degenerative condition that affects your spine motion segment, which consists of a disc and two facet joints at each level. When a disc ages it can lose its normal fluid content and can protrude out, this is sometimes known as degenerative disc disease and it is one of the more common causes of back pain. ...Read more

Was rear ended on Highway almost a year ago, been in severe pain since throughout my back. L5 S1 B.L. facet hypertrophy, should I get more imagestaken?

Rearended: It is very common to damage your facet joints in a rear ended collision due to extension of the joints. At your age, healing would be fast and almost complete. Physical therapy will help keep the joints mobile, but as it may be painful, facet joint injections would help you do it without pain. At your age, inflammation is more likely than degeneration, so my advise would be steroid inj. Not RF. ...Read more

I recently had an MRI with the results facet hypertrophy at the lumbosacral junction and clips in the gull bladder fossa. Can u please explain?

The facet: Joints are small joints that articulate the posterior vertebra with one another. "Facet hypertrophy" means degenerative arthritis of these joints. The lumbosacral junction is the junction between the last lumbar vertebra (L5) and the first sacral vertebra (S1). "Clips" in the gallbladder fossa means surgical clips or staples, so you must have had your gallbladder surgically removed in the past. ...Read more

I have mild to moderate facet joint hypertrophy at l1/s1 worse on right side. Cortisone & nerve block injections have not worked pain is getting worse?

Maybe this is just: Not the source or only source of your symptoms. Facet joint pain at this side and level is typically localized pain that may refer to buttock & groin worse with back extension &with prolonged sitting & standing. Facet joint issues account for about 20% of primary cause of back pain so see a spine surgeon to make sure this is your problem & to see if other treatment may be in order. ...Read more

I have mild to moderate facet joint hypertrophy at l5/s1 worse on right side had cortisone & nerve block injections but pain is getting worse?

Platelet Rich Plasma: PRP is an offered treatment that has shown good success however is considered experimental at this time. The basic theory is it helps to strengthen the ligaments around the facet joint using your own platelets/growth factors and therefore reducing stress on the joint by tightening them up. As far as I know its safer than steroid injection. Pretty cool stuff. Check out regenexx. Com ...Read more
